Have you guys heard of this or use it yourself? People just spray listerine on them and it works as a mosquito repellent. I've read about it and seen it a couple places but never tried it myself but i'm open to anything when it comes to repellents, hate them mosquitoes. If it weren't winter i'd try it myself. If this has been discussed already then I apologize. thanks

I saw this for the first time on Discovery just the other day. I know that locally (Georgia/NC) the ol' timers swear by pickle juice or vinegar for ticks and mosquitoes.

I would love to hear if anyone uses these methods. Maybe one day we will see it on Mythbusters. Certainly safer to test than the cannons.

Don't know about it, But I'm sure the smell would drive me crazy....Also when in the bush I always get nicks, cuts and scrapes I think Listerine would be kinda uncomfortable....

I too have seen this method on TV, but have no first-hand experience. I would think that mouthwash would be a sticky alternative (though better smelling than vinegar) unless cut with water, but am interested to see its effectiveness.

Not sure as a bug repellent, but this past summer I had a horrible chigger incident from
trekking through low lying woodland after days of rain. After I realized what was covering my lower half, the entire chigger population of MD,when I arrived home i used a entire bottle of Listerine to help remove the creatures from there embedded home. Worked pretty damn well.

I am sooo glad this came up. I've been wondering about this since I saw that episode if Moonshiners.

But if you get the kind made with alcohol, it will automatically sterilize your wound :4:

I love outdoors advice from people who actually go in the outdoors. But i don't know about this, they are moonshiners after all.

And being good southern boys, they may be just messing with the viewing audience to see how many people they can fool into spraying themselves with mouthwash. These are the same kinda folks that brought us "snipe huntin' and the "Wampus Cat" and other fine things to make a body look like an idiot! :54:

Interesting. I've read that ticks can detect the C02 in your breath when you are walking through the woods, and then move out to the tip of a leaf or stem in hopes of hitching a ride. Would Listerine use act as a deterrent? Obviously it would not reduce C02 in your breath, but maybe the smell would be repellent....?

Mosquitos hone in on you through the carbon-dioxide you breath out...
