Hello, I've come up short time and again searching the 'net for this particular beast, but I know they are (or were) made.

What I'm after is a combo gun with a .22 LR OR .22 WMR and 20 ga shotgun.

Here's the trick, though: I want the rifle barrel ON TOP, and all the guns I've found have them on the bottom.

I knew a guy who had a Savage 24C like this (he wouldn't sell), and I think Baikal made one like it, but I can't find either.

They are still around, but yeah, hard to find.
Keep at it took me a while to finally find one, now I see them at gun shows all the time, (Savage m24's that is)

Local toy story had a couple of new ones, but were .17 over 20 ga and .17 over 12 ga as well, hinda pricey @ about $650 bucks.
haven't figured out what you would use a .17 for....so passed.

But is there a certain technical thing about having the rifle on the bottom and not on the top???

Rifle barrel on top gives better accuracy. The sights are closer to bore axis, and co-register better, all else being equal.

Shotgun barrel on bottom may make the opening angle of the barrel/ action more critical, to clear the larger SG rim. That may be why manufacturers prefer to put the SG on top. Cheaper made, poorer design.

I can't say that I ever saw a SG on the top, rifle on the bottom except for maybe a "drilling"..... DB on top, rifle onthe bottom under DB.

I have a Baikal IZH-94 Sever that is as you describe. 22lr on top, 20ga on the bottom. It's a great gun. I bought mine used through a forum. Not sure where you'd find one new in the USA.

Exactly.

That's the one! Have to see about ordering.

One of the big box manufacturers was making combos after the Savage went out of production (Remington maybe?), and the shotgun was on top. But IIRC, it was a 12 Ga, so maybe it was because of what GreyOne said about the opening angle being too steep with the larger shell.

The 24C (or "Camper" model) was just one variant of the Savage model 24 line and tends to go for a bit more than the other versions. While the whole line has been OOP for a while, it is still fairly easy to find on the second hand market. Check some of the gun auction sites, the 22/20ga was a popular combo and they come up fairly regularly.

For example, their is a nice looking Savage 24 in 22mag/20ga up on Gun Broker right now with a current bid of a bit over three hundred and a 24C with the original case for a little less than six hundred. :4:

Savage still makes the model 24,not sure of the current price.
No, unfortunately the whole Savage 24 has been out of production for a number of years now. Given how popular the used guns remain, I really wish they would reintroduce the guns. I know I'd buy one.

I owned a Savage "Campers Companion" at one time. Was great for pot shooting. It had a .22 over .20 short tubes. 18" I think. In addition it had a trap door in the butt for ammo and broke down into two pieces without tools for storage. Kick myself in the butt for letting it get away. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure if this would work for you but I'll toss it out there anyway.

If you can find the 24V in .223/20ga you can pick up the chamber adapter that will convert the .223 to .22 WMR, it's $20 for the adapter. The guy who makes these is out of Alaska, makes each one by himself.

This would give you what you are looking for.

As for rifle on top, sg on the bottom I completely agree. I've not actually seen one where that was inverted. It's nutz.

My local gun shop-Top Guns,in Madisonville,Ky. still has it listed in his Savage catalog, starting at $395.00 depending on the model.Of course it could have been an old book;lol

mdauben is correct that the Savage 24C is a particular compact or camper model, and actually rather rare these days. In reality the kind of caliber combo you are looking for was very common and offered under different model designations for several decades. As far as I know, these guns more often than not came with the rifle barrel on top.

This site has a wealth of info:

Here's a photo of mine, a 24 "Deluxe" model, .22 mag over 20 gauge (shown above my 20 gauge single shot H&R Pardner). I found it used at a local gun shop about two years ago for around $400. Maybe kind of a lot to pay, but these are hard to find in my area and this one's in good shape. So I snapped it up. It's a keeper.

I have the Savage 24 in .22 mag over a 20g; and no it isn't for sale. Guess it is no longer made. I've never seen one with the shotgun barrel on top.

I just picked up a Springfield M6 and love it. As a woods bumming gun it will be carried a lot and shot a little. So far I love it. The trigger is a little different but I found if I just use my trigger finger it works well. It is very accurate.

I have the stainless model with a full choke. I plan on shooting it at length this weekend and will publish a report when I am done.

For what it is worth... after paying a pretty penny for the M6 I am left with the thought that I could have purchased an H&R 20 gauge and a Ruger MkIII 22/45 and had quite a bit of cash left over for ammo.

The M6 however, is very hard to find and even though I paid a premium for it I am pretty sure that I can get my money out of it if I ever need to sell it.

Good luck in your search,

Rick

Thanks. I'm not searching real hard as I do have a nice, accurate .22 WMR pistol and a nice shotgun.

The combo gun would be in the "nice to have" category, it's not really providing anything I don't already have.

I have this exact same gun, and IMHO it is much better that the old Savage.

It swings like a real shotgun, and the .22 barrel groups under an inch at 50 with Rem Subs.

In general rifle over shotgun seems to be the

American format, and vice versa preferred in Europe. The Baikal shows these rules aren't hard and fast.

FWIW, the two best shooting combo guns I personally know of are a 60s Voere in 20G/.222 and a 20s or 30s Austrian Ferlach Drilling in 12G/12G/6.5x57. The Voere was mine. Both were shotgun above rifle, and both printed just over an inch at 100.
