Maine Primitive Skills School Knife

There is a lot going on there I'll say that. There are for sure differences between a bushcrafting knife, and a survival knife. I'll leave it at that.

I was reading about the School in Maine on their website it sounds pretty cool, but that knife has a lot going on fo sure. ;)

Would that be sort of a punk version of a Kephart ?

Wow, what a multi-tasker.

Reminds me of the TOPS Hawk Hellion

I don't like the saw teeth on knives, not on the tracker not on this, They are worse than a partial serrated edge to me.

At least it is 1095, but I didn't see the price.

It's there, $250.00 without a sheath, add another $25.00 for a nylon sheath.

Looks like a nice knife, but nothing a good folding saw and a Becker BK-2 couldn't do better for $75.00 with a sheath.

Agreed 250 is just to much

I think the best survival knife would be the knife you have with you when you need to do some surviving. Other wise if I have advance notice that I will be in the bush I bring a saw and other woods related tools with me. Just sayin.

Maybe it works for some people, but that just isn't what I would chose to carry in the Maine woods.

I wasn't gonna click on the link but when I read it compared to the Hawke Hellion and the other comments I had to look. I think this thread needs a pic:

Looking at the picture: (Random thoughts time)

"Skins scraper"? I don't see why the blade couldn't be used for that.

I don't care for sawbacks at all, atleast this one's got some good seperation between the teeth and it almost looks like they're alternating l/r kind of like an early Tom Brown Tracker (pre-Tops). If you like them, some saw-backs are better than others?.

The Bow-Drill divot looks pretty small and I don't like them on the "finger-tip" side of the knife (I'm right handed).

Overall I like the blade shape, pretty useful tip....prefer a little more upsweep but it works.

I've seen others use the Busse "front hole" and stop because of lawsuits?

I don't like the idea of tying my only knife that I'm depending on to survive, eat etc. to a stick and using it as a spear. That statement alone "holes for lashing to a spear" is an oxymoron? If it's already a spear.... than use it as one, and hang on to your knife.

Just my opinions/random thoughts. Out of curiosity I looked at the "other knives" and this is the cream of the crop. Wonder if anyone here has one or has tried one?

Call me old fashioned but a knife and saw should be separate tools unless you're talking SAK.

Nothing but respect for THe Maine Primitive skills Guys.. there skills and knowledge far supercede my own,
However, I feel like allot of these crazy knife designs are like trying to reinvent the wheel
a cutting edge was once the original multi-tool
and arguably to this day still the best
give me a knife that takes a good edge, and holds it I;ll be impressed
I think saw backs and spear lashing applications are bells and whistles more related to macho fantasies of survival rather than practical wilderness living.
However I;m just disgruntled city boy..
again nothing but respect to the guys from the school for there knowledge and skill
and the knife looks well made.
just not for me or my concept of wilderness living
just my 2 cents fwiw

I had one. I liked the teeth, they were the same kerf (spelling) as a Jonesered Chainsaw and cut easy notches for traps and snares. In the end I gave it to a friend and opted for a frost. The handle of the maine primitive skills blade was too uncomfortable for prolonged whittling. Just didn't fit comfortably in my hand.

I'm a Mainer and I don't like the look of that one bit. It's like the Hawke Hellion and a Kephart had a baby and the results are a bit painful to look at. Just my opinion, though. Again, much respect for the Primitive Skills School, but there's no way I'd carry that if I had a choice for something more "normal." :o
