I have a couple of Marlin 336 Lever Action Rifles.

One is a full size with a 20" barrel in 35 Remington. A full size rifle with a cartridge with good knock down. It is a beautiful rifle with nice wood.

The second is the topic of this thread. I picked up this compact 336 in 30-30 and like it a lot. It has a 12.5" length of pull and a 16.25" barrel with a total length of 34" it is over 4 inches shorter than the 35 Remington.

I've topped the Spikehorn with a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot sight mounted on an XS Lever Scout mount. This red dot allows me to shoot with both eyes open. The 3 MOA dot doesn't allow really tight groups but they have a new version that has an adjustable dot from 10 down to 1 MOA. I may have to pick one of those up.

A lot of the hunting I have been doing lately is on the ground and to some extent by walking and stalking the deer. I had one shot at about 70 yards that I didn't take with my Marlin 1894 in .357 because I NEVER want the animal to suffer. I want a clean kill. I would have taken that shot with this 30-30 topped with this red dot.

I've started doing some shooting from a standing off hand position. Today I took some shots at about 30 yards. I'll continue to work with the gun.

Take a look,

I had wondered about the youtube thing today as well, what I did was copy the URL and paste directly into your post ( don't uses any tags )

Shooting the Spikehorn!

Looks like I got it down. Shooting it from the bench with the red dot on level 4 after the first shot I couldn't see the dot so I had to crank it up to 7. It worked fine then.

Then I shot it off hand. I really like the 170 grain Remington Core Lokt ammo.

Thanks for the youtube help!

Nice rifle. I am a big fan of the 30-30, and the 35Rem. You mentioned you passed up a shot on a deer at 75 yds with your 1894 Marlin in 357mag. If you are confident in your rifle and shooting ability, you should have taken the shot, as Anything inside of 100 yards is well within the ability of that little rifle. I have one that I can't count the number of coyotes it has dusted between 70 and 100 yards. That 30-30 though will be a far better deer rifle and you won't have to worry at all about taking those 100 yard shots.

Best wishes,

Joe

i picked a 336y up at the end of nov. it will be for my oldest son when he gets a little older, he's 6 now. so far it's sitting in the back of my safe, never been shot

I bought a 336Y back in 2003, from Bass Pro in Ft. Lauderdale. I went to the store to buy a Winchester '94 they had on sale, but when the doors opened, and I made it to the gun counter, they were out of those.
After speaking to the store manager, he let me pick the little Marlin instead, and I bought it at the sale price of $269!
Through the years, it has been a solid performer, and I have taken some nice deer with it, as well as some tasty wild hogs.
I use the Speer 170 grain FP, over IMR 4320 powder. Accuracy is consistently right at 1 inch at 100 yards.
Currently, I have an elderly Denver Redfield 1-4X mounted. The stock is way too short, so as a short term solution, I added a 1 inch spacer of walnut. It is still there!

These are sweet little Marlins, I love the abbreviated tubes as they really improve the handling characteristics in heavy timber. Fortunately for me I've found the shortened LOP not much a problem during the cold weather deer seasons we have. With the heavier clothing I wear for hunting and my thicker upper body (barrel chested) the short LOP's generally "improve" the quick mounting characteristics for me.

On the other hand during warmer months I tend to notice like most other adult men. I don't however have a lot of use for the .30-30 during the warmer months here in Pennsylvania generally speaking. :)

The Marlin 336 is a great weapon, I to, would like to get one (336Y).

If you having a problem with the stock length, you can purchase a standard size one from Marlin, and it takes about a minute to take off the youth stock and put on a standard size one.

Unfortunately, Marlin has suspended lever action production. They were having trouble after closing down the New Haven, CT plant and moving production to New York.

The 100+ year old machines didn't take kindly to the change of venue and the "Freedom Group" made the bonehead decision of refusing to allow the workers from CT to work at the NY facility, thus all that knowledge and experience was pissed away by a desk jockey.

The problem was shotty workmanship, and no QC. Their returns for warranty service shot through the roof, and has brought the company to their knees until the personnel can put together their products correctly and reliably.

I sure hope they get it right soon for I'm looking for a Model 39A and a 336Y.

Now I know how it feels to "be getting old"! It seems all of our old, honored, American Institutions are falling by the wayside. :2:

I picked mine up at meanie's.

Between the Marlin rebate and a meanie's $50 off coupon I paid $300 for my Spikehorn.

I don't mind the short LOP and love the short barrel. I was considering having the barrel of my 1894 CSS trimmed from 18.5" to 16.10". This would have cost me about $150 plus shipping. I figure it would have been At least $225 - 250. So this compact 336 was a bargain indeed.

Thanks for the feedback,

Rick
