I have a couple of Marlin 336 Lever Action Rifles.
One is a full size with a 20" barrel in 35 Remington. A full size rifle with a cartridge with good knock down. It is a beautiful rifle with nice wood.
The second is the topic of this thread. I picked up this compact 336 in 30-30 and like it a lot. It has a 12.5" length of pull and a 16.25" barrel with a total length of 34" it is over 4 inches shorter than the 35 Remington.
I've topped the Spikehorn with a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot sight mounted on an XS Lever Scout mount. This red dot allows me to shoot with both eyes open. The 3 MOA dot doesn't allow really tight groups but they have a new version that has an adjustable dot from 10 down to 1 MOA. I may have to pick one of those up.
A lot of the hunting I have been doing lately is on the ground and to some extent by walking and stalking the deer. I had one shot at about 70 yards that I didn't take with my Marlin 1894 in .357 because I NEVER want the animal to suffer. I want a clean kill. I would have taken that shot with this 30-30 topped with this red dot.
I've started doing some shooting from a standing off hand position. Today I took some shots at about 30 yards. I'll continue to work with the gun.
Take a look,
