I'm getting cabin/work fever. Between the work schedule and commitments that are made for me, I'm stuck inside reading everyone's adventures. Using gear and goodies on the back porch is getting old. Wife won't let me carve in the house anymore. I've gone through all the gear and packs for everything from family car camping, hiking, bushcraft, BOB's, and everything in between. There's nothing on TV. What a conundrum.

What do y'all do when you're stuck at home for weeks?

Annoy the ol' lady... :)

Seriously though it sucks. I usually end up reading and learning as much as I possibly can about survival/bushcraft. But even then you hit a wall there too.

The fire pistons been working pretty sweet BTW

I'm guessing you don't like the bowl games...so I won't mention they are fantastic today....your OR ducks just won a thriller.

but you know, you can spend a lot good time watching Ray Mears videos on you tube!
Not only is the bushcraft awesome in those...but his voice is so mellow...it could stop ya from practicing the blowgun on the family pet. :D

It's Jan 2. Book off the first weekend in Feb (4-5). Do it now, mark it off in you calendar now. If you don't have a calendar, the get one and mark it off. Look, as a professional I know how easy it is for your schedule to fill up all of a sudden. The only way to combat that is to plan ahead. Make a schedule, book it off (with work, with wife, with whatever) and stick to it (guard it like a pot'o'gold). That's how you get it done!

I get on this site and lose track of time until it's time to go back to reality. Other times i pack and unpack my gear a few times.

I pack unpack my gear enough the wife jokes about it. She'll have a running bet with herself about how many times I go over my gear before I leave on a planned outing...

Sharpen knives, do small projects the hard way, do hard projects the harder way. Live on the forum reading everything. Go out in the back yard and strike a small fire. Make char cloth on the stove. Eat a bunch of soup for the cans, then make more twig stoves I don't need.

Well said! Sounds like my daily life.

Good idea...:dblthumb:

I know what you mean it's hard for me to go outdoors because I have the gout but I still manage to make a go of it once in a while.

I think KGD has the best plan. Cabin fever can be a real issue.
I'm lucky, I guess. I end up splitting firewood and kindling at least every other day. I have two axes that need new hafts. Between tending to my chickens in freezing weather, cleaning up after the dog, and making repairs to stuff around the property that I overlooked when the weather was good, I'm usually glad to get back indoors by the fire.

That sounds like a great idea. I think I might do a little traveling and get some woods time around then myself. :dblthumb:

I watched most of the Rose Bowl today. Killer game(when I wasn't sleeping on the couch). I'm limited to what i can do at home. Stupid apartments. I think I've watched Ray and Bush Tucker Man at least 4 times each. I have a few books. I really need to get more. Right now, I'm on my second round with Tom Brown's Field Guide. I think I may have a little ADHD along with short term memory loss. I have to read a book more than once to absorb it and I can't read for more than an hour at a time. I only use stun darts on the cat. Oh, and shoot it with the water gun. That kills some time...
I'm buying a calendar tomorrow and marking off a few weekends. Thanks for the input. You're helping me out of the rut.

Under the circumstances, I don't know about ADHD. I can't usually concentrate on a .... Wait, what were we talking about?

ROFLAO! Get a laser pen and really drive 'em nuts! ;)

Those old Ronco pocket fishing poles are great for teasing cats. Easy to cast while sitting down, and hide beside you when the cat's momma comes around the corner to find out who is tormenting her little baby.

I have no wife, kids or girlfriend, but I have had a bad hacking cough for the past 3 weeks after catching a bug. Cant get rid of it. I am not going anywhere till I'm over it. I feel the same way. I spent some time clearing some trees and deer hunting around my house over the weekend but I do not feel like roughing it (There is no deer hunting with a cough). I live in the woods but it is not the same as really getting out there and testing yourself. I am bored.

I feel your pain! Its been weeks since I've had the opportunity to do anything bushcrafty. Between tghe holidays and work it's been a no go for woods time. Hopefully things will start to slow down a little for me to get out there.

Well, my boredom has been cured, but not in a fun way. Going on day 7 of 12 hour days at work. To top it off, I slipped and tweaked my back. I'll be buying some more books now. I won't be getting in the bush any time soon...

When it rains, it pours... Sorry about the back. Hang in there.

All that OT ought to pile up some money for a trip, and even a bit of new gear.
make a plan now.

Hang in there man, hope the back heals up soon. I feel your pain, sometimes I just about go nuts wanting to get out and do something. I make up for it as best I can with backyard bushcrafting (if it makes you feel any better, we don't even have a "backyard" either, just a patio since we live in a condo), and like KGD says you just gotta book it in advance on the calendar.

Any time I try to do an impromptu outing it usually takes 3-4 reschedules before I actually get out of the house. I use group campouts and hammock hangs as a way to schedule outings on a regular basis, and then supplement that with overnighters on my own periodically. In between I spend (probably too much) time reading this forum, bushcraft books and watching videos.

Back is healed up, still a little lower back pain from time to time. I've been a little more involved in scouts and volunteering as much as possible. It keeps me busy enough 'till Spring. Still doing the OT as well. I need a vacation in the woods soon.

You know one thing I do when its snowing like crazy and I dont feel like getting out is downloading topo maps and studying them, memorizing terrain features, mountain, valley, and pass names, Water locations, etc. Sometimes I plan out escape routes suitable for my whole family for different seasons and try to find ideal locales for places to settle in for a while in the deep woods. Just a thought. Also its fun to try and scout out new hunting locations.
