Just a quick 20 min mod session on my CS shovel. Sanded the handle in the lathe and added some grooves at 1" spacing. Also sharpened up the edges. Takes a real nice edge by the way.

I used walnut leather dye bees wax and turpentine.
For the color.

Damn nice work. I really like the added grooves in the handle.

Great looking mod, thanks for the pics.

I have had mine for about 10 or 11 yrs, I have used it to do the obvious but have also used it to cut up to 3" saplings to build a shelter. I think it is one tough and valuable pc of kit.

I had always thought of them as a gimmicky POS. When I saw IAWOODSMANS video, I was once again enlightened. I have never been a fan of Cold Steel. Now I will never give up my trail hawk or shovel. It always pays to listen when someone wiser than you is talking. Thanks for the tips IA.

There ya go causing random acts of shrafting, I had to get mine out and whack some silver maple. Felt good!

My birthday is next week, so I just ordered one. Should be here right on time for some bday bushcrafting.

I really like the grooves on that handle. Thought I'd share a couple mods I've done to my Cold Steel shovel... leather sheath from local military surplus, gutted 550 wrap, and a 550 loop for hanging purposes. Also sharpened up one of the edges, sanded the handle and applied stain. Love this tool!
