I went to town a few minutes ago. I wasn't alone. The local flock decided the grass was greener on our side of the fence.

All together there were around 40 birds in the flock.
Thanks for viewing.

Hardly anyone hunts them around here.
I missed a photo op of about 12 birds sitting in one little lilac tree! It looked like a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds". LOL!

I can see the marquee now....'Watch out for THE GOBBLERS!! Coming soon to a theater near you!'

Lemme guess... not a bird to be found during turkey season, right?
We went from a special drawing with about 60 tags issued per season in two hunting districts, to over-the-counter sale of tags. Still very few takers. Mainly bowhunters, 'cause it's good practice, and they still present a challenge with a bow in the early fall.
Wild turkeys around here lead a rough life. I imagine they are not like Eastern turkeys that grow up on acorns, and other sweet nuts. They don't taste like anything to write home about. Kinda like a pine squirrel with wings. :p

What's that white stuff on the ground? We're finally getting some much needed rain here, but still no snow.

Lucky you! My new snow blower got it's first road test yesterday. I'll tell you, a snow blower is to a snow shovel as a rototiller is to a spading fork!!! ;)

Cool stuff! We have 'em here in town, now. One ran into my friend's wife's car and left a dent just ahead of the rear wheel well. There was also a flock of turkeys near where I work that was intimidating people walking on the sidewalk.

They can actually get aggressive once they've become "civilized". If you have a half-dozen of them trying to steal food from the the pet dish on the back porch, they take exception when you try to remove it!

I have never seen a wild turkey! you are so lucky.... the only turkey I get to see has a bag of gizzards stuffed down its neck hole

We have the corn fed variety around here, but like in your area, there aren't many besides bowhunters that go after them anymore. My neighbor hates them because they crap all over his patio. I'd rather that we had an excess of ringnecks rather than the gobblers myself......they are the ones that have gotten scarce:mad:

Yes! I hunted pheasants every year with my family as a boy. I've seen ONE ring-neck here in ten years!

Actually, there is a horror movie with turkeys. It is called Thankskilling. NOT for the kids, and not for those looking for a high quality horror film. I watch a lot of horror movies, I even enjoy the B level ones, and that one is really bad. You have been warned!

Trouble in paradise!

Not worth it's own thread, since I didn't get any pix, or videos, but this local turkey clan had quite an adventure this afternoon.

The wife and I were watching the birds foraging along the side hill across the little swale from our place. All of a sudden a Golden Eagle swoops down!

Compared to the turkeys, this eagle looked like the legendary Thunderbird! It was quite a sight, watching about twenty 12 pound turkeys scatter like a covey of quail! Some were flying, others were scurrying into the brush for cover.

The eagle made a couple of passes, and then disappeared behind some brush after one low dive. It reappeared after about 15-20 seconds, and flew off. I don't think it got one of the turkeys, because it would have spent more time eating. Maybe he just thought it would be fun to scare the daylights out of them! Very interesting to watch, but I am curious why it didn't pick out one for dinner.

I saw a flock of about 20 a few days ago on the way to town, in a field along the road.

It's a shame they taste gamy out your way, since there's so many of em!:p

It's not that they taste "gamey" really. They are just tough, with no fat. We raise our own chickens and broad breast domestic turkeys. I'd say our wild turkeys would compare to an old hen chicken that's ready for the stew pot.
Of course, this is just my personal tastes. I guess a fairer comparison would be to a snowshoe rabbit.
