Location
rural America but not as far out as I would like
A member requested that I post some photos of my US musette bag that I mentioned in the Finn gas bask bag thread. Here it is:

It is a little larger than the Finn gas mask bag. I like the Finn bags but I like this a little better. I waxed it and it has been used quite a bit and held up very well. I think I got it at a gun show for around 10 or 15 bucks.

It has a nice small pocket on the side for fire kit or whatever.

I have rigged up two surplus shoulder straps that make it work as a knapsack/backpack, or you can just use one for a shoulder strap. There are two small d rings on the bottom that make this mod easy. You could also use one strap for a waist strap like on the Finn gas mask bag. When fully loaded it is most comfortable for me with two straps over the shoulders so the bag hangs low against the back.

Inside there is lots of room with two main sections and a middle divider that has two pockets in it. There is also another pocket on the back of the bag that is good for holding a knife, bag axe, gloves etc..

I added a small compass pouch that stores small items.

I won't go over all the contents as it is pretty much the same stuff that everyone carries...water bottle, cup, tarp, fire kit, cordage, etc...

And one knife shot, Koyote knife and belt fire kit...

Thanks for looking.

Very cool, really bring back a lot of memories.........Thanks for posting.

I have had and used this one since the early 50's... that I can remember, and has always been used for one thing or another, including a lunch bag to carry on the back of a motorcycle.

Lately it is being used as a carry on the ATV tool/ air pump bag.

Was going to start a "What is the ratty-est piece of gear do you still use regularly?" thread....Might still do that.

I had one of those growing up, used to go everywhere with me. Don't know where it ended up, but last week my dad pulled on out of his basement and asked it I wanted it, practically new. Brought back a lot of memories and it'll be handy for hitting the woods.

A year or so ago a friend mentioned that he wanted a nice shoulder bag for school. I looked and found that I had 3 Musette bags so I sent the cleanest one to him. But before I did that I carried my College Algebra book, a notebook, calculator and other small school things in it for a couple weeks to make sure that it would work. ;)

Found the two I still have in storage the other day while I was looking for parts to my Blackhawk S.O.F. Ruck. Been thinking about cleaning one of them up and using it as a day bag to go with the Ruck.

I have a few of these, all repro's, but are made ok. I'm using one here on deployment, just use it to carry a few bottle of water, a meal and paper work when and if I travel to different camps. Use mine as a shoulder bag, not a pack.

Nice kit!

Thanks for posting this, GKit. Great pictures and a cool setup. Definitely gives me some ideas. How heavy is that kit, btw?

Depends on the day but usually around 10 pounds or less I would guess. There is room to spare for more if needed. Food/lunch camera adds more weight but I do not always carry those. When fully loaded it is a bit cumbersome as a shoulder bag and that is why I added the extra strap. You can go back and forth between shoulder and back carry if you have a long way to walk. It does not look or sound comfy but it rides low, almost like a lower back, belt pack that is supported by the shoulders. It is not bad to carry. When it is slung over the back, you can stick a rolled up poncho liner or blanket under the straps and that is a comfortable way to carry it.

I would say this is the maximum size bag that I would want that is not a traditional "backpack" and that works out well. I have a couple of the Finn bags as well that I will probably use for designated fishing/trapping kits that I can keep loaded with gear. My main issue with those is that they do not do as well as this bag without mods, when fully loaded. They are nice/smaller when you want to carry less stuff but carrying less stuff is always a struggle!

I know what you mean. I like the Finn bags as well, but was looking for something that had just a bit more room for general carry. I also like having the flexibility of carrying on the shoulder or back depending upon the situation. I think this bag would be a good choice.

Thanks again for the great post!

This brings back memories. My Dad brought one back from the Army and I used it for a school backpack for a few years. I still have it to this day.

Thanks for sharing.
