My son and I hit the woods with our muzzleloaders last weekend. He got a bad case of "Deer Fever" during rifle season and missed a doe, and since then he has been having some doubts about his shooting ability. I can testify to his accuracy, for a 14 year old young man with limited practice opportunities he can really shoot!
The second reason I am posting this is the knife in his hand. I won that knife in a giveaway that PMSteve did last spring. I told him at the time that I planned to give it to my son, and Steve's only request was for me to take some pics of Devon using the knife and post them up. Here they are, he used the knife to field dress and later to skin his deer. Thanks again Steve, he loves that puukko!
Back to the shot. He was carrying my second muzleloader, a .45 caliber Hawken. It's an old school caplock frontstuffer loaded with a patched roundball and utilizing iron sights (no pyrodex pellets or scopes for us!). He made a very nice heart shot, and I paced it off at a touch over 150 yards!

Needless to say, I was very proud of him for making a difficult shot look easy, and he is happy to discover that he can still shoot when the need arises. Thanks for looking, and thanks again to PMSteve for the knife!

Looker,
Tell Devon congrats on his deer. Good on you for showing him the way. Fathers and sons together in the woods, it doesn't get any better. My middle son(12) killed his first deer this year. I marvel at these boys as they grow into young men.

Awesome stuff!

Congrats to Devon on the first deer....with a muzzeloader no less!

And a special thanks to you Looker for teaching him about the outdoors and letting him get at it!

Those are Wonderful moments and life-altering experiences! Congratulations to the both of you on a fine harvest.

Actually, this wasn't his first deer. He got that one last year while I was deployed.:2:
Funny thing is, he killed his first one with the same muzzleloader, from the same stand, and it was standing in the same spot! His shot wasn't quite as good that time, but it did the job. As for fathers and sons Mac, we both hunt on my Dad's place. My son sits about 200 yards from me, and about 300 further on is where my Dad sits. There are a lot of places I could hunt and have better luck, but hunting with my Dad and my son is something I'm not willing to give up.

You just can't beat a proud smile like that!

Gotta be a proud Dad behind the camera, too. I'm really happy that he's getting good use out of the knife. It will last him a long, long time! :4:

Happiness is a large gut pile (and a good knife!). :14:

Hell yeah! Thats awesome. Tell him good work.

Outstanding. Got to love the front stuffers, have several myself cap and flint both keep you honest shooting. He did a fine job and you did too.

He has got to be one PROUD young man (I know dad is, too)! Especially making a shot like that with an iron sighted muzzleloader! My sons and I all hunt with percussion or flintlock muzzleloaders and, thoroughly enjoy both the limitations and advantages (longer hunting seasons) of such a primitive weapon.

Great job! You are raising him well to shoot the traditional guns.

Tell your dad that I've been hiking with the tamarac staff he gave me and it is excellent.

Thanks! I just tried to call Dad, he must be outside, but I'm really glad that you like the staff. We took some of the little dead lodgepoles that we picked up out there and donated them to my Scout troop. The Scouts sanded and finished them and made some beautiful hiking sticks that they presented to our newest Eagle Scouts!
