I made it from walnut. A local living history ranch had to
cut the tree down. They milled the wood to use for restoration projects.
I was lucky enough to get a couple boards.

I started out carving with my Mora.

Finished it up with the belt sander.

Gave it to my wife as a after Christmas present.
She loved it.
Thank you guys & gals for inspiring me to get back into making stuff.

Great present and well made. really pops out the grain.

Thought you said this was your first spoon.

Nice.

Boy that looks gorgeous, nice work. Next time I see a black walnut tree I'll have to grab a suitable piece sized for a spoon!

Wow. That's really good work. Did you use the belt sander to carve out the bowl?

I wrapped a old sock around the handle and clamped it in my vice.
I used my 4 1/2" angle grinder with a 60grit soft pad.
Then hand sanding 180gr-600gr my thumb still hurts.

I know power tools are frowned on but after an hour carving
with the Mora and not getting anywhere I gave in.

Softer woods I will stick to the carving knives.

I definitely don't frown on the use of power tools. If you've got 'em, use 'em I say. There's nothing wrong with technology unless you're specifically trying to do it the old fashioned way.

The hand sanding must've been very frustrating. I've done enough hand sanding to avoid it when I can. Haha.
