Figured this would fit here. I need a topical antibiotic for an infected nail. It went ingrown, then got stomped by the kids...alot. So now it's really messed up and a doctor is out of the question (no insurance).

What I'm considering is a vinegar soak followed by a poultice of fresh garlic, salt and vinegar. I also have honey and lemon juice available, but thats about it.

Ideas?

Put bleach and water as hot as you can stand in a pan and soak your toe, then apply raw honey to the area and cover with sterile gauze. Repeat as necessary. I had exactly the same thing once and my mother-in-law used this on me. I think it may have also been a torture device, but it worked in one application. Make sure that water is super hot though.

But seriously have you thought about going to one of those clinics? They might be able to see you on the cheap and might have sample medication to give for free.

you can help the nail grow out by putting a very small piece of cotton under the corner of the nail too. i'd just use neosporin myself, but honey is also good (those of you who remember me slicing almost the entire pad off my thumb last spring will be happy to know i treated it with honey, over the stitches, and there is almost no visible scar, despite how deep it was.)

i sometimes get an ingrown nail just from wearing one pair of shoes too long (like on a LONG plane trip, up at 5, don't get home til midnight, that kinda day). your foot gets all hot and sweaty, the skin softens, and the nail bed with it, and before you know it, bam, you've got an ingrown nail. i use that cotton trick when i feel one coming on, as a preventive. learned that one from my family doctor.

iodine/salt footbath, then wrap with prid drawing salve... I have a chronic issue with ingrown toenails(both big toes... going to get the nails removed 1/9, hopefully for good this time), and that pulls the nasty out better than anything else I have tried

Triple Antibiotic ointment from the pharmacy (OTC)?

Use epson salt soak to remove inner infectious material, then apply locally produced honey and salt. I say locally produced honey because there is no telling how much the processing procedures dull the anti-biotic properties of store bought honey. Mix the salt and honey together.

Yeah, salt burns but it is a hell of an anti-biotic. You could also replace the salt with smashed up garlic cloves.

Honey is about the best of the natural substances I know of for this.

The hot soak , in bleach or epsom salt solution either one, will do some good as well.

1+

Raw honey, sea salt if you have it, if not epson.

I had a Badly ingrown toenail - infected .. Swollen .. Etc. Nothing solved the problem ..
Finally, I pried the edge up with my Leatherman plyers, and cut the problematic nail off with my Mora knife ... (hurt like hell, but in the end it Fixed it)
If you can't get it worked out, you might give that a shot .. Plan it out (don't over-think it), and just Go For It !!!

You might try this.
I added a couple links on how to make it and its use.

Dakin's solution
a weak, mildly alkaline solution of sodium hypochlorite, used as an antiseptic in the treatment of wounds

Looks like what Scott was talking about too.

BEEN DARE DONE DAT:26:

As someone who JUST got done with IV antibiotics and still has a minimum of 10 days of oral antibiotics, let me assure you that you want to get any infection cleaned up properly. What happens when an infection goes bad is... expensive and dangerous.

A preemptive doctor visit is likely going to cost $75-100. Antibiotics? Maybe $10? They are cheap.

When I got bit, I immediately went to the ER and got antibiotics, but it wasnt enough (bites are particularly nasty). The cost to save my finger once the infection took hold? So far the bill is like $26,000 and growing. Thank all the gods that workers comp is footing THAT bill!

Buy once, cry once.

Take care of yourself. Good luck.
