I am going to be purchasing several Northface basecamp duffels to use for my long trips to the desert with my Jeep. I would like to get all the same color bags, but will need to identify the contents without opening them. To do that I thought about tags, but don't want anything else hanging off of them. So it occurred to me that I could wrap the end handles with different colored paracord. What are some of the fancy ways of wrapping these handles. I also like the idea that this will also give me tons of short pieces to use if needed.

Here is what the bag looks like.

Id say just do a cobra wrap like the bracelets using the end handle as the core instead of the normal cord core. Or if you wanted to carry a lot of cord do a paracord donut around the handle. Or even take pipe and slit the side of it till you can slide it over the handle then do a handle wrap like in the basic bushclass.

Those are great ideas. Too bad I don't know how to do any of those. I will have to start surfing YouTube. :)

That's how I learned. Then google the braid e.g. "Cobra Weave" and there are step by step tutorials with pics that help a lot.

Hate to be a pill but is that an ID pouch on top? Write out the contains and put it there?

That's not a bad idea if tcmault is going out with others who don't know how he breaks his stuff down and where to look for what. But I'm thinking he just needs to be able to quickly identify his food bag from his cloths bag kinda thing. Like using red to identify the bag(s) that have a first aide kit in them.

Correct, that is an ID holder on top. Sadly these will be stacked so I usually won't be able to see those. These will be used for my clothes, wife's clothes, kids clothes, and Food. So quickly being able to identify who's is who's by the color of the handle wrap will be extremely helpful.

When I was in Afghanistan, they would unload all of our gear into one big pile. Bags for 300 or so people at a time, all identical! My wife sent me some duct tape she got from the craft store, it was black with flames on it. People learned pretty quickly that my gear had that tape wrapped around the handles and, next thing you know, I was the first guy to collect all my gear at every stop ("Hey Looker, here a bag with your flamer tape on it!"). Paracord would be handy to have along, but I thought I would offer an alternative idea.

Whip or braid the end handles with different colored paracord... Also change out the zipper pulls to colored paracord as well.

Just my $0.02

I think Monkey fist's are really neat. I on the other hand have not a clue how to make them nor the patience. Since Para cord can be bought in just about ever color why not make your own color system. Something like this.

Dads gear, Black cord.
Moms gear, White cord.
Boys gear, Blue cord.
Girls gear, Pink cord.
Food, Green cord.
Medical, Red cord.

Hang your cords off the zipper pulls and ever bag will become easy to I.D. !

Youtube has lots of neat videos on weaving and tying Para cord.

I don't know if you plan to ID each pocket or just the bag itself. If it's just the individual bags then simply make all the zipper pulls on that bag the same color out of paracord. And you can use other cords of different colors if you need more colors then what's available in paracord.

If you're just looking to color code and not get fancy, just putting the cord through the zipper pull and tying a knot and melting to secure it will do the job (provided the holes in the pulls are large enough). Actually that's what's on there now except for the plastic ends and they're not needed in the bush.
