Need review of military stove on eBay

think Sportsmans Guide has them not like you'll get much of a review there though

Don't own one, but I have read they are heavy, take a lot of modding to get them to draft right.

I believe sdjsdj owns one.

Not sure where to post a request like this...

Anyone ever come across one of these stoves? I assume they are poorly made but of course I am tempted by the low cost:

I have one that is very similar, if not identical, by Great Northern IIRC.
It is solid enough iron, burns fuel pretty efficiently, the one time I tried it.
Far to heavy to take other than by vehicle, though light enough (35# ??) to pick up one handed for short distances.

I got mine for about $99, direct in a store, 4 -5 years back.
The price on this one come out just about the same with the S&H.

Worth the money if it suits the use you will have.

I have built two stoves sorta like that.
12"x12"x18' rectangle shape.

I had a old military tent 15'x15' we used it for deer hunting in Colorado
one year. Used the stove in it.
We brought about 1/4 pickup load of 4"x15" eucalyptus. We couldn't really control the stove.
It had a dampener on the pipe and adjustable vent on the door

The second night we burned up all the wood we brought with us.
It was either to hot or almost out.
The good news was my buddy had a crappier sleeping bag than mine,
he was up most of the night stuffing wood in it.

It was most likely the design of it and the type of wood.

Gave one away, the other I converted into a propane forge.

My 2c is with a small stove someone will be feeding it all night,
so buy a better seeping bag than the other guy.

Thanks for the input guys. This would be for a smaller canvas tent (8x8). I'd only be using the tent and stove when hiking in short distances with a sled.

One knowledgeable fella I spoke to said that 2 1/2 inches may not draw well. For you guys who have a similar stove, what is the size of the pipe? Does it draw ok.

Man, I appreciate the input.

i have the same as Grey One which i believe is exactly the same stove with a different name .i have not played too much with it but did find it drafted poorly.i was told to chuck the chimney cap and put a flat grid on the bottom of the stove for airflow and it would be a dandy -this i have not tried yet.as far as weight goes -not a backpacking stove but figured it would be no problem in a winter pulk for ice fishing or camp -for the price i could not resist either

From what store did you buy it?

[review]

So I picked up the made-in-china versions of this stove:

The front door is flimsy. The legs were rather hard to get in on the front legs. The low-quality paint had to be burned-off in the yard before using.

That all said, it's perfectly adequate for my needs. My tent is only 8x8 so a little wood heated it well.

So, with shipping it was $100. That was great to get me through this winter. Someday when I have $100 more, I will get the two-dog stove as it's an order of magnitude better than this one. Strapped-for-cash can do OK with this cheapie.
