Finally got some decent dirt-time over the weekend. My last over-nighter was back in March, which is entirely too long. Heather & I camped with the dogs Friday, then our friends joined us Saturday. Got to practice some skills & had a nice time walking about.

Our favorite camp site was pretty overgrown, but we managed to find a clear spot where we were comfortable building a fire ring. Our dog Inti decided it made a good nest while Heather took a nap. How can you not like a girl who's not afraid to lie down in the dirt?

I needed some stakes for a shade tarp & tie-outs for the dogs:

Then got to practice the flint & steel:

In the morning, the dogs practiced at being hyenas.

We had a nice view of Mt. Wrightson & the Santa Ritas covered in snow:

Mid-day temperatures in the 60s. Real nice to be lazing about.

Saturday evening our friends joined us, and I finally figured out how to cook with a dutch oven I got a year ago. Made a nice beef stew with dumplings.

It was a beautiful, clear night, perfect for sipping beers around the camp fire.

I got up early to catch the sun on the mountains.

Later I took Lefty on a bit of a wander.

And all too soon we were on our way home, but feeling much refreshed & ready for the new year.

Looks like you had a great time. I absolutely love gardner canyon. Its one of my favorite places to hike/camp. Good to see somebody else loves it too.

Great outing...beautiful dogs, amazing scenery and mouth watering food.

You've covered all the bases! :)

Man those are great pics. Kinda scared me when I saw the body stretched out with a shovel standing by though.

Thanks, DB, for the great photos and sharing your outing. Brings back many memories of when we lived in Nogales and spent a lot of time up there in Gardner Canyon and wandering the Santa Ritas.

That is some scenery! Looks like a great time and I love your blue heeler. I've owned several in my time and my current dog Holly is one! Thanks for sharing your adventure!

Love that area. Have hiked the Florida Trail a couple of times back in school.

Lichen, is that the trail you'd follow if you hiked from Madera Canyon up to Baldy Saddle and then went left (ie. instead of right to go up to the peak of Mt. Wrightson)?

That is, here?

Good stuff, my friend. Those mountains are beautiful.
