On Wednesday I took my son driving to get some time in before he takes his driving test and we stopped at the mall so I could pick up some fresh veggies at the farmers open market. Walking into the mall I see a table set up with several items as well as brochures. A nice gal in Army fatigues tells me I can have anything on the table free and to grab some brochures too. She was there with another gal in civilian clothes to bring awareness to a problem at many who spend time in the outdoors may not even be aware of: unexploded ordinance! Just last week off a popular beach 10 minutes away from me a suspicious looking item was found in the water and reported. Beach was closed, and a military bomb squad arrived to dispose of the item. When I was a teenager my father and I were on little offshore islet there to pick Opihi (limpets) from the rocky wave-swept shoreline. We were taking a break on the beach and I noticed something halfway buried in the sand. I called my dad over and he could see it was a type of unexploded ordinance so as soon as we got back on shore he notified the proper authorities and a team came out and disposed of that item. There are several offshore islands as well secluded valleys here in the islands that were used as practice bombing ranges during WWII. Also Hawai'i was one of the few places on American soil where actual battle took placed during WWII. I still have a 12.7mm machine-gun bullet from a Japanese plane that my dad and me found washed up on the beach back in the mid 1960s. This is a serious enough problem that the DoD is promoting this awareness program at the local malls, and targeting especially the young ones who are more likely to pick up and bring home these types of objects that they may find outdoors. This is not a problem restricted to Hawai'i but to the rest of the country as well. Read the linked brochure below which tells about one tragic case.

They had all kinds of cool things but didn't want to go crazy so I grabbed just a nice camo day pack, and a stainless steel insulated coffee mug.
