So I'm digging the concept of an underquilt. I'm wondering if it would be advisable to alter my sleeping bag to serve as an underquilt/blanket...I'm envisioning a "pea=pod" concept I've heard mentioned but haven't found any real reference to.

Basically, I can unzip the bottom of my bag, so with bungees top and bottom to keep it in place, I zip it around my hammock and have a built-in underquilt.

Ideas/suggestions?

If I missed a thread on this, please let me know!

And yes, I've watched all of Shug's vids, but didn't see anything about doing this.

You'll be best served by searching the DIY threads at hammockforum.com I bought an old down bag so I'm in about the same place, but I think I'm going to attempt a mod to uq rather than a pod.

thats funny you mention that, ive been thinking about that the last few days, i have a donor ecw bag that i might try to use as an underquilt.

i think you will find the "pea pod" concept kinda restricting size wise if you lay off center. There are many DYI plans i have found on line.

That's been done before and there is no reason it shouldn't work for you. You could also Google up garlington insulator. It is basically a field expedient method of improvising an underquilt.

You should watch Shugs videos... ;)

J/K brother,

I think your idea will work pretty well.. Just get out there and try it.. It might constrict you in a little tighter than you want, but you never know until you try.. Let us know how it works

That was WAY useful! I found this link: http://www.tothewoods.net/HammockCampingWarm.html

Lots of useful, easy to see and copy pics of DIY underquilts and pads. Thanks!
