I just put my boots on and walked for the first time since my injury. In the RAIN no less! I have been walking in tennis shoes (serious execise type walking) since I got off crutches. I know that doesn't sound like much, but somehow the feel is totally different. I still have pain and the hiking boots bring it out more but it's such a HUGE step (no pun) forward. I'm still waiting for my clearance to walk "Off-Road". It can't come soon enough.

Missing hunting season and not being able to enjoy the amazing camping weather has really made me a sour puss. I'm telling you somehow I am burning this lesson into my rock hard brain; I may not be able to do this tomorrow, do it TODAY. I am missing basically a full year of backwoods type of hiking/camping as it is. Soon as I get the ok I am going to be car camping as far out there as I can get. I'm taking advantage of any free time I can etch out of my life to be outdoors. My 8 year old daughter got a hammock for Christmas (her request :dblthumb: ) and she is ready to join me. All the more reason.

Somehow I feel like I'm too old to let it slip by me anymore. No more taking it for granted, even if I have to tattoo it on my forehead!

Thanks for listening.

Good on you. Carried my grandson for a walk in the Sandhill crane sanctuary at Christmas time. Probably only a mile path, but I had 20 + pounds strapped to my chest and didn't use a cane. I felt good about it.
Keep plugging away

I hear ya, man! Just do it! I just got a three month reprieve from my cancer docs, and am heading into the woods next weekend, and any other time(s) I can shake loose this spring!

If you get the gift of one more day, use it - many others did not get that gift today.

Good luck on your rehab, and travels! :D

Outstanding! I know the feeling having to take time to heal, but you will heal. Great positive attitude!.

there are folks out there who dislike the fact that there is a paved road running parallel to the Appalachian Trail for about 6 miles along the TN/NC border in the Smokies, and further dislike the fact that the trail from the parking lot to the Clingman's Dome tower is paved as well.

this brings home the case of accessible wilderness. not all of it. but some of it, so people who can't get around easily (OLJ excepted) can still enjoy a view.

I don't know how far you're wanting to travel for car camping, but Rabun county has a campground surrounded by national forest so you can bushcraft at your camp and if you are feeling well enough, there are trails to a couple of waterfalls nearby. Angel/Panther Falls is 1.6 miles and Minnehaha Falls is .4 miles.

Minnehaha falls is my favorite of the three

Keep up the positive attitude. Pain is weakness leaving the body. Stand proud (no pun) and we'll be thinking about ya!
