Cold Steel Knives has their SAX knife/machete both 12" and 18" on clearance at substantial savings for just $9.99 each including the sheath! This knife/machete has thicker steel than the rest of their line at 2.5mm. I am not thrilled at the shape of the blade but at $9.99 I figure it's a decent piece of affordable steel to play with. Along with their Barong these discontinued Chicom made machetes seem to generally rate higher than their South African made machetes especially concerning quality. From what I gather the factory in China was destroyed by fire thus the discontinuation.
Again I'm not thrilled with the shape but I see it as a diamond in the rough. I took a picture and cropped the tip of the blade into a drop point. To me anyways the drop point shape make this knife more versatile. What do you guys think?

have one....was considering a WSK type mod....your proto looks good......the plus side is it has the grippier handle than some of the other CS hard plastic handles. I tried a similar mod with the CS bolo......

I picked mine up stupid cheap (7 bucks) a while back and promptly hacked it up.
Here it is in it's current-ish condition.

It's been vinegar patina'ed, convexed, lost the pinky-breaker nub and the nasty plastic hanlde. It's getting a 1 peice oak grip pinned with copper tubing. I'm stalled at drilling the tang for the tube...it ate my 5/16 drill bit...and cutting the oak is going really slow: gotta wait till the kids go to bed, then go at it with a sawzall blade on a stick. It's getting there.

That looks great! Keep us posted on it's progress.

As peter griffin would say "freakin sweet!"

Makes me want to get a couple..mod one like yours and the other like their bowie machete they dc'd...... Hmmmmmmmmmmm

Definately picture #2. Looks good, and can't beat the price.
Pics of the progress please, Donk.

I still like mine in the original configuration. Interesting design.

I like shorter seaxes as well. I've made a couple and have noted some neat things about them. One is the ease of sharpening, the other is the ease of use and the way they cut.

here's the bolo i cut down....need to mod to your drop point- the handle is much harder and less "grippy"

Looking great Rusty, thanks for sharing. ;)

I've heard that allot about Chicom CS machetes versus SA CS machetes that the Chicom knives have superior design and materials in their grip. Alsop that the sheaths are superior too.
I'm pretty happy with my CS Chicom Barong and sheath definitely worth every penny I paid ($11.99). :4:

I gave in and ordered my 12" Sax yesterday. As soon as it arrives I'm making the modifications to the point, and I will report when complete, and hopefully get some field time in too. SWMBO will be PO'd but better to ask for forgiveness than permission right? :4:

Sometimes... sometimes it's easier/better to ask for permission than forgiveness. Judgement is the art of knowing which time is which. At that price I'm betting you made the right call though. ;)

A while back my girlfriend got me a Himalayan Imports Seax. Great blade, but I suppose that would be considered premarital seax.....

I have been using a CS Sax for several years now. I have the 12 inch, as well as the 18 inch models.
Can't see why anyone would modify the blade shape. It is just about perfect as it is. Cuts with authority, sharpens easily.
I keep one beside my seat in the old 4Runner. Quick to grab and clear a trail obstruction.
I liked the design so much, I asked one of the blade smiths I do business with to make me an authentic Viking langsax. 350 layers of hand crafted, pattern welded sweetness. Razor sharp, sturdy............who could ask for anything more? :D

Maybe I will have to try her out as she comes from the factory before I decide to make any modifications. I know I have some Scandinavian, and Saxon blood in me from Dad's side and maybe that part of me will love it and not let me change it. ;)

SAX Change Operation

I got my Cold Steel Sax in the mail a couple weeks ago, and after looking at it, and trying it out in the backyard I decided I just didn't like it in the current form so I decided to perform a sax change operation, and here's the result: A large drop point knife. To me it feels and looks better and I think it's a more practical design for my needs. Also on the now empty section of sheath where the point used to extend I put a brass grommet to attach a 550 paracord leg lanyard. Like a dope I misplaced the paracord but you get the idea. ;)
