That system is certainly better than a lot of what happens in some places with household sewage but I can't imagine it would be something for northern areas where frost would destroy it. I think he must be somewhere warm or they do mission/service trips in mild or tropical places. If there are no codes it's the Wild West of sewage. Might be wise to dig a pit and install an outhouse and use the septic for gray water only then you avoid a lot of the issues from solids. Paper is the worst culprit and anyone who rinses lots of grease into the drain system from the kitchen is asking for headaches.

Long ago, my neighbor built a cinder block tank shaped like an igloo. It had large rocks that surrounded the outside. It was just himself and his wife, no paper went in the tank. They didn't have any children.

We put in a 1000 gallon septic tank and run the outflow to a lagoon pit full of cattails which keeps the smell down
