I am considering doing an Old Hickory Cleaver mod. It has a strong, heavy spine and 1095 carbon steel blade. The price is around $15 or so. As anyone ever reshaped a cleaver into a Bushcraft knife. Hopefully, I can pick one up this weekend when I get another grinder because mine died last weekend... Any thoughts guys?

I'm by no means trying to discourage you but this is my take. Making/re purposing things is great fun and all don't get me wrong but ok 15 bucks for the cleaver and the time involved in making it into your in-visioned tool and so forth to me it's just not worth it considering the moderately priced options in knives anymore. But hey that's just me and how I look at things, and my time is very limited. 10 bucks more you could buy a condor.

Just my 2 cents worth.

DO IT!DO IT!DO IT!DOOOOOOO IIIIIIT! the old hickorys are fun to reshape.i love em,and it means more to me when i "make" or mod a knife to my desires.so i say do it:D
....try and cut it so you have a big enough piece to make little psk with the leftover bit:Di made this lil guy out of a OH butcher knife i reshaped

I'm working one right now. Gotta put the scales back on. I got it for $4 though. I am shaping the main part into a shape like a Mora CraftLine Chisel Knife. Then I'll have enough left over for a couple of PSKs. My main edge is done, and cuts corners off paper nicely. I'll post pics when I have em ready.

Not an Old Hick, but My cleaver mod.

Good point, but money really isn't the main issue. I can afford a more expensive knife, but there's a certain joy to hold a knife that you have made/modded. I may get a condor also...

I made this one from an old Case XX:

I'm currently finishing this one from an old Dexter:

That Case-XX is sooo sweet...one of my favorite mod pics on here- and I have seen a LOT.
If you ever decide to part with it....add me to the list.

Making a blade to one's own style and pleasure is a ton of fun. So what if I can buy ready made. If I make it then the knife is a part of me and something my kids can show their kids and tell em about stuff i made and did.

Fun times IMHO

Awesome pics, all of em. I too have a mod cleaver. The appeal of these mods to people like you all or myself is the fact that I "made" it, and although there will be similar knives, mine will be one of a kind. There is a darkside however and you guys may have already experienced this - If I drop and LOSE my one of a kind, self modded, hand crafted, sweat and blood imbued, beloved knife while I'm on a trail or in the woods there will be no store to call, no catalog to order it from, no internet source to replace it. Nerve racking lol. Oh, and it gets even worse if its something that a dear friend made and gave you. Pics of mine http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57837

I'm in the middle of an old cleaver refurb. I have micarta in the making right now for the handles. i think it will turn out decent.

Hey everyone, stumbled upon this thread looking for pics of Old Hickory mods. Been considering doing an OH cleaver mod, any ideas on a good shape?

I say do it! What the hey, 15.00 doesn't go far in raw mtrls if starting with a blade blank. Besides like most mentioned you'll have the privilege of saying you made it and it will be built to your personal specs. To top it off it gives ya something to do and will be a learning experience. Matter of fact I have cleaver at my shore place that's rarely used, guess what I'm gonna do!!!!!
