In Kephart's "Camping an Woodcraft", he mentions pantasote Gaiters, poncho, pouch, tarp, table-top, bucket, and wash basin. I have tried searching (here and web) and haven't been able to come up with what exactly he is talking about. It appears to be a simulation leather produced by the Pantasote Co (but i dont want to assume) and if that is what he is talking about would it be similar to Naugahyde by today's standards? Asking more out of a desire to know what he is actually talking about than for any practical reason.

I found this:

Pantasote: a synthetic leather material used for the folding tops of some formal, landaulet models; it was less flexible than canvas but afforded greater protection in inclement weather. First ad appeared in 1918 describing "the most expensive and the most serviceable top material".

It appears you google powers are stronger than mine, thank you! Now that i know they were used for the landaulets of cars i have a better understanding...it was essentially Naugahyde...seems pretty heavy stuff to have been used in camping though.

Glad it helped. I saw another reference to cameras, so I assume it was used in the bellows assembly of old cameras due to its superior light proof qualities. Now if I just knew what a landaulet was, I might consider myself informed.
