there's a lot of folks to thank on this thread...I'll try not to forget anyone...

we all learn so much from each other.

Werewolf One started a thread about biking and bushcraft - opened the doors to a lot of great discussion.

BucketoSudz has been killing me with his fatbiking threads - motivated me to put that on my list of 'to do's' ....

So... it was a little chilly this morning. 22 degrees Ice on the Samurai. :p

and this is today's destination
Springhill Park in Barling, AR. The AMBA has a few races here each year.
the trail is single track and comes close to the river in places, we'll see that later:

Christmas Eve...cold...not a soul around ...
good thing - I don't think I'd fit in today with the lycra crowd. :4:

Here we have a typical shot of the single track running thru the woods:

Those aren't true "fat bike tires...only 2.5" instead of 4" on the pugsleys...
but I air 'em down some and they print way over 3" of tread.

and yeah...it's a single speed - ya'll know I like simple tools! ;)

I reached a spot I wanted to set up... and took off the pack
the pack was the tried and true - Molle2:

I pulled out the Frost River Lunch Sack with the grommet mod -
and in about 10 mins of wandering around...had gathered up some fire prep.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this lunch bag - big thanks to Croatoan and Super Tramp for going before me on this one.

this was the gear for the day:

SAK (ALL wood work was done EXCLUSIVELY with the SAK today)
Purcell Trench Grill
My "bush stool" I like so much (PVC irrigation cover)
USGI canteen set up
Soup and Spam - lunch of champions!
Roll of TP in a baggie
Otterbox 2000 holds the phone and wallet
Catfish line spool
Paracord pre-cuts
GT Ultra Lite Hammock
All of it's sitting on the awesome BSUSA MEST tarp.

(big thanks to Faol and Koa for sourcing these tarps - the more I use one...the more ingenious I think they are)

{of course, my survival necklace was on, and the M-2 Ditch kit (PSK) and Glock 26 were on my waist}

more to follow... (2 posts down)

Looks like you had a great time. I'm a little envious. Thanks for posting and Merry Christmas.

HUGE thanks to Iz for his great video on how to use a SAK farmer to split firewood.
this whole deal today worked like a champ.

here is the baton and wedge I made.
the shavings are caught by the hammock - they will come in handy later!

found a flat rock close by - used it as a base to baton into
again, this system worked great

some splitting. I got lucky and found an old piece of cedar. oh yeah..it was easy, cheesy from there on. :)

the awl of the SAK and the firesteel off the necklace popped a nice spark into the shavings pile:

so we gotta start some lunch:

and now....the soup has boiled up...the Spam is getting ready....

I took a step back to let the soup cool off...
Hung the MEST tarp 'different' today....but it worked perfectly for an overhanging branch. :)

then it was time to relax awhile...and THIS is why I LOVE hammocking!
can you imagine trying to get a tent in that spot? no way!

and watching the Arkansas River roll on by:

packed it all up...biked back the 5 or so miles to the sami.... and headed back to Christmas Craziness...but I did have some quiet time today! ;)

thanks for looking - hope you enjoyed it.....and MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!!!

I keep seeing that packer grill in you posts and have to keep from reaching for my checkbook to order one lol. Looks like a great time solo.

Thanks Bill

well, I did say at the top...we all learn from each others posts.

....and sometimes we buy gear off 'em. :4:

Nice day there.

Yeah, gotta get some wide tires for my hardrock. Last time I took it out, I sank in the sand and nearly couldn't keep riding...and it was hard, wet sand. Normal loose and I'd have been walking!

Ah, spam n soup...sounds good right about now. Fighting off the last of a nasty cold...got the nearly-done-tired-icks...yeah, spam n soup....

~totters off towards the kitchen muttering something about spam and vikings...~

I need to get my mountain bike out and get it fixed. I used to ride allot but got bored with it. Bushcraft Bike!!!!

Looks like a nice trip Solo. :dblthumb:

How big is that MOLLE 2 compared to a medium ALICE????
It looks like a nice pack.

Nice job and great looking SAK!! I always like combining bushcraft with my biking.

It looks like a nice pack.

It's smaller - in this "base configuration.

but the neat thing is that it has a butt pack and top tube pack....
I rarely use them. The butt pack holds a ranger roll perfectly! (that's the poncho and poncho liner)

I LOVE the way this pack has a frame sheet - and since I'm bigger - the straps that adust at the top and bottom both... ah...perfect comfort! ;)

A Bike, a Sami, and sack full of gear...what does one say Brother? I am glad that through a bit of my self-serving posts that I have inspired you to get out, ride and enjoy the outdoors. That's a Grand kick in the pants and Thanks for taking us along!!! :dblthumb::4:

Bushcraft and mountain biking go great together....great pics....love ur bike. Next to surly, specialized are my favorites.

lol...Sudz...you - self serving?
if everyone were as "self serving" as you..... I suspect poverty, war, and famine would all be done away with. :)

but thank you brother.

thanks to all of you for the kind words. BCUSA is a great place to share and learn.

Talk about good practice for a get-out-of-town SHTF scenario. Great thread - really enjoyed the pics.

Great day to be out. Can't beat a relaxing day away from people in the woods! I'm going to practice that splitting technique.

love that grill and the tarp. I should have both but have not made the move on them-there's no excuse for that.
Thanks for taking us on the trip

Cool trip, thanks for posting. Be careful when airing down, the relatively narrow rims that are on your bike plus the wide tires could cause the tire to roll off the rim if you corner too hard. I am speaking from experience, I'm a bike shop service manager and a 20+ year mountain biking veteran.

Looks like a fun day, thanks for the pics!I'd like to get my mountain bike back on the road, that poor old thing is 25 years old.

:dblthumb:way to go Solo and i'm right with ya on the convenience of hammocks:dblthumb:
thanks for posting...woods

thanks for all the nice comments guys - glad you liked the combo. makes for a nice 1/2 or 3/4 of a day 'out'. :)

Wheelmanron - thanks for the tip. I usually just bleed 'em down a bit - using the heel of my hand as a guide...I'm just looking for a little 'give' to help me not to pop a flat going over some exposed sharp roots or rocks or something.

Those Maxxis Hookworms are usually the biggest tires most mountain bikers have ever seen around here.....they are about 1.5 x the size of a 'normal' mountain bike tire...so I usually get comments when I meet others for the first time at trailheads or whatnot...but then I tell them about the Puglseys and the new Moonrider tires that Surley has coming...their jaws hit the floor! :)

woods...here's to NEITHER of us EVER having to WILLINGLY spend another night on the ground!
Dunno 'bout you...but my back would like have me hanged for that! :D
