was out in the garage tonite messing around with friction fire and knife skills and such, and did as little experiment with fat wood, cedar and pine. i shaved small scrapings of all three and lit them with the ferro rod, first up was the fat wood, i scraped it into thin scrapings and lit the small pile, it only took about 2-3 strikes with the ferro rod, and burned well and smoky.
next i used dry pine. i did eh same i scraped off small shavings and lit them with about the same amount of strikes from the ferro rod....and as you might have guessed it the dry cedar did the same.
my conclusion is...as long as the medium is dry and properly prepared the wood/tinder should light.
man i love messing around with my ferro rod.
o i must say that i did use multiple scrapers, like the light my fire scraper and a carbide bit scraper and the back of my diving sparrow knife.....lets just say i liked the control and the sparks given off my knife the best.
