Back several years ago my uncle gifted and old Springfield trapdoor rifle he had. Now this rifle was in pretty bad shape, the stock was broken in several spots, all the barrel bands were missing along with the lock, cleaning rod, butt plate, and rear sight. the barrel and reciever were in ok shape though, no heavy pitting just surface rust.
So I thought to myself its been almost 8 years since i got it and I should probly do something with it so I sent it off to my gunsmith for a good cleaning and reblueing. Here is how it looks so far and hope to update you with the progress.

P.S. I forgot to tell you all that it's an 1884 Model.

I would restore it in a heartbeat! Go here......

Go part way down the page and check out the shooting matches that are available. Since you are from South Dakota, contact those two guys from Wagner......I know them both and they are very knowledgeable and trustworthy and will give you great advice:42: PM me if you need any more info.....I hang out with lots of Springfield trapdoor freaks:22:

Good luck with the Trapdoor, there is nothing like bring old rifles back to life.

Rebuilding an old rifle, bringing it back to life, always give me that warm fuzzy feeling...
Congrats, worthy project.

She's a beauty. How's the bore look? Rifling still clean? Dark bore not so bad as long as the rifling is clean. I'm sure you're already aware of this but just as a reminder keep the loads mild as these guns can't handle pressures above blackpowder level. My dad owned two of these Trapdoors and I have pleasant memories of helping him reload using a Lyman 310 tong tool, and cast 500 grain lead bullets. He used a mild loading of IMR-4198 powder. I personally would reload cartridges using blackpowder. I LOVE the smell of blackpowder in the morning! ;)

The bore on it is very dark, and the rifling is still in pretty decent shape. I plan on shooting only blackpowder threw it, thats what is was intended to shoot and i really like blackpowder :4: !
