it is rely hard two understnad when folks rite and never use punctiantion and spel ckecking also pleez use reel words and leaf tha texting style 4 phones

The reason I started this post is I noticed quite a few new members who look like they are sending text messages.

Using proper grammar and punctuation is very helpful for the reader. I truly appreciate this when I try to read long threads. I often struggle trying to comprehend what the poster is trying to convey.

Thanks in advance.

Good post but don't forget some people will be posting from mobile devices and phones.

I agree with ya Lab. It hurts my head trying to read the no caps and no punctuation posts. Almost as bad as the page long endless paragragh posts.

i generally don't read or respond to them... the writer must show me the respect of writing at least halfway intelligible English before i return it. the only exception is our foreign posters... the fact that they either know SOME English, or care enough to write a post, run it through a translator, and then post it, speaks volumes to me... three particular europeans come immediately to mind...

edit: i find that i'm more tolerant of an older poster who is simply not good at english, vs a young person who appears to just not CARE to use some semblance of proper english/spelling/punctuation.

this is one of my favorite poems on this subject (actually, it's the ONLY poem i know of on this subject.)

Owed to a Spell Chequer

I halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plane lee marques four my revue
Miss steaks aye ken knot sea

Eye ran this poem threw it
Your sure reel glad two no
It's vary polished in it's weigh
My chequer tolled me sew

A chequer is a bless sing
It freeze yew lodes of thyme
It helps me awl stiles two reed
And aides mi when aye rime

To rite with care is quite a feet
Of witch won should be proud
And wee mussed dew the best wee can
Sew flaws are knot aloud

And now bee cause my spelling
is checked with such grate flare
Their are know faults with in my cite
Of nun eye am a wear

Each frays come posed up on my screen
Eye trussed to be a joule
The chequer poured o'er every word
To cheque sum spelling rule

That's why aye brake in two averse
My righting wants too pleas
Sow now ewe sea wye aye dew prays
Such soft wear for pea seas

i don't often use caps when posting on a forum because it enables me to emphasize words when i need to... helps convey inflection that might otherwise be lost. capitalizing it is a Minor emphasis... capitalizing the WHOLE word is a Major emphasis.

punctuation is fun too:
a woman without her man is nothing

ok. now let's punctuate that:
A woman. Without her, man is nothing.

(my wife is an english major. i've learned a lot from her.)

if you like this kind of stuff, there's a book called "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves", about grammar and spelling errors...

I wonder if I can find a bushcrafters guide to spelling and grammer on amazon.com.........

Let's eat Grandma!

Let's eat, Grandma!

Proper punctuation (and spelling) saves lives!

I even send text messages in proper grammar and use punctuation in them. Forum posts all get the Mozilla auto-checker but the occasional typo slips through. I'm with you though; blatant misuse and butchering of the English language in written form is no good on forums.

I have not turned on a computer in months. I use my phone for just about everything i do, especially here .From taking and posting pics to all my posts. I also have not been in school since the day I turned 16.So if my posts are not written in a manner pleasing to you with what I have to work with ......well I'm sure I don't have to finish this sentence :).Actually I think I'm pretty good but the tone of your post and a few others is alittle highbrow for a bunch of bushwhackers like myself -

Let them without syntax errors cast the first red ink....

I agree, grammar is important, but for the most part I am quite tolerant of mistakes.

How many times do we not capitalize the personal pronoun I? I say live and let live, if you can understand what they are saying then that's good enough for me

I hvae Larened Taht The Mnid can raed a snetence as long as it is wttiren with the frist and lsat lteter of the wrod.

Well, most internet-capable phones have full keyboards, or at least a mini qwerty board. My Droid had two different versions.

I can understand typos and mistakes. I really dislike wanton disregard for the language. I am not the best speller...I an quite good at stumping spellcheckers. I am sure my Google file has me searching all sorts of really odd things as pasting a flubbed word into that search seems to be the best spell-check on the web.

But oh yes, PLEASE lay off the "r u their?" stuff???

I really hate it when every word is a sentence too, with each word capitalized. I think that is some weird setting, but I have never encountered it in my ten years of tech'ing compoopers. If someone knows what it is, I'd love to find out.

i would capitalize more, but i just don't give a shift...

While proper spelling and punctuation is certainly not a bad thing, the important thing is the message that the member has added. I could never understand why people hate how other people spell things or articulate them, why get angry? it only stresses you out.

Seems as tho every Forum has members who harbour these secret hatreds towards how others spell and punctuate. We've got enough of big brother watchin us these days without having to worry about the secret grammer police watchin us. Wouldn't want to offend anyones educational senses now would we...

Mistakes are one thing, but laziness is intolerable. I am currently on a tablet, and I just have to take my time and edit my posts. Nothing highbrow about properly using the English language.

I try my best but I do use my phone 90% of the time and the combination of auto correction and my Alabama public education I aren't the best at spelling and grammer haha

Not you Tramp. I am not asking for perfection just consideration. FWIW I like your posts. You speak plainly and you're easy to understand.

I hope you're joking about not using capitals or the spouse being an English teacher. Certain words like the pronoun I, and proper names are always capitalized regardless of the emphasis desired, I don't make the rules I just follow them. The first letter of the first word of a sentence is also capitalized rather emphasis is desired or not. You can use proper grammatical conventions and use capitals for emphasis, proper grammar shouldn't diminish the tone of capitalized words intentionally capitalized to add emphasis. Alternatively bold text adds emphasis without contradicting proper grammar.

Whoa there tex...lighten up....you are taking this way too seriously.

Nothing highbrow about properly using the English language.

I agree, if thats what you feel you should do I certainly would not object. However the highbrow part comes into play when those who do look down at those who don't. ( not saying you've looked down on anyone ) I am speaking in general.

I am pretty good at proof reading (so I spot errors quickly), and I generally try to make my own posts at least semi-literate .. But, nothing irritates me quite as much as self-righteous "grammar-nazis" ("Especially" when their rant contains misspellings and poor grammar) .. Peh !!!
This is not a 'writers forum' - All we should be concerned about is whether the posts are relevant to Bushcraft, and/or associated interests.
...... imho

There seems to be quite a few folks getting worked up about this post.

If you are offended by this post it was not my intent. If it came across as highbrow or as a grammar nazi it was not my intent.

This was my personal observation that I made recently concerning some posts. I am not asking for perfection from anyone. I know that I have made and will make many mistakes in my posts. I just find it hard to read some posts that look like text messages - no punctuation, etc.

Well said - even with those misspelled words :) (guess it matters which side of the border you are writing from.)
