I really love the Mocotaugan style crooked knife I made. Great for carving spoons and such.

I tried a while back trying to carve a kuksa and kept losing them to massive cracking... Watching all Adahy's threads got me motivated to try it again with a piece of spalted silver maple from my in laws yard.

I wanted a deep one. I figure if I'm gonna carve it, it should be super useful. The mocotaugan http://niftydeluxe.com/crookedknife/CrookedKnife.htm
is one of the most useful carving tools I've ever held, but this particular circumstance highlighted a weakness of the mocotaugan style crooked knife

You can't really deepen the bowl and keep it smooth.

I knew what would work, so I pounded and ground out a spoon knife:

I tried a trick with bending the tang I saw on here recently with this one. It makes the whole deal much more stable.

Whipped up a quick handle.

Wrapped it up and glued the wraps:

Great for hard to reach places...

aaahhh smooth. This will save hours sanding, if I end up sanding it. The knife should get better once I properly sharpen it.

I hope this one doesn't crack.

Love those spoon/crookedknives!

Hmm...we may have to do a trade:D

PS--Good looking kuksa! Try sticking it in a paper bag with the shavings, away from heat sources.

Great job; sometime I want to try one. I agree with you; might as well make it deep enough to make it worthwhile

I'd like to become a BCUSA supporter. Would anybody like to trade me a 1 year membership for one of my crooked knives?

I agree with trekon about putting the shavings back in the hgole and keeping it in a paper bag, I also make sure the growth rings are 90 degrees form the hole not parallel with it every one I trie to do parallel with the rings cracked.

Adam put the shavings right back in the hole they came out of it will take longer to dry but I really think it helps by less surface exposed to air.
