I was browsing some videos on hafting an ax. I have only done 3 or 4 in my life and all of them were very time consuming and laborious, getting the right fit as I think it should be ( to fair success I guess) and I saw this video, and having watched the entire length, decided that this man was not simply making an ax handle, he was giving a wood working seminar. I really enjoyed this, I learned some, and I hope you folks find similar value in it. :dblthumb:
Sad to think once upon a time this was considered an average skill to possess. Amazing work, I wish I could make feather sticks like his shavings were, let alone mold a piece of wood into something like that!
I've done similar with a tomahawk using the sharpened beard and mohawk for planing the wood, but no way I could do it with just an axe and mora like this man...thanks for sharing.
I wonder if this wood was soaked or something? Seems like it was shaving real easy.
That was great. No power tools or even a drawknife or spokeshave. No vice to hold his work. Just a saw, axe, knife, and piece of broken glass for a scraper.
He makes it look so easy. It is great seeing a true craftsman at work.
When I was a small boy I admired the ax owned by my grandfather. He told me that it was the ax owned by Abe Lincoln during his log splitting days. He then added that over the years the handle had been replaced 5 times and the head twice. That made perfect sense to me. Tony
