Red Wing 914

Does anybody own a pair and can give any feedback on these boots, or the comparable models with the different toe or insulation options?

I'm trying to find some reviews, but i cant seem to find any.

I friend has those boots and he seems to like them. I have a pair of 4414's and they don't breathe so if its hot out my feet sweat like crazy. The 914's are gore tex so they seem to breathe better than my boots.

I have what I think is the 608, which seems to be identical except without Gore-Tex. Anyway, I love them and expect to own these boots the rest of my life. I bought them mainly as a motorcycle and all-purpose boot but find they are quite comfortable for walking/hiking once broken in (which I'm still working on). The quality and materials are very good. I opted for these because I wanted a "heavy-duty" boot without the weight of a steel toe and shank. As for ventilation, I have not noticed a problem of sweaty feet -- and my feet tend to run sweaty. Personally, I think GoreTex makes a boot breathe less well than plain leather. If you keep the leather in good shape, a leather boot will deter water as well as GoreTex, IMHO.

I agree with you about Leather's water repelency, and about gore tex. in a synthetic piece of footwear with a lot of mesh, the goretex is a breathable option for water a repellent, but if the leather is doing that for you already, and the leather isnt breathable, than all the extra goretex does is insulate your foot further. I would be really interested to find boots like yours without the goretex. Thanks for the helpful reply!
