Question for you guys. Any idea how to remove two SS handles that have been spot welded to the side of this pan. The handles are attached to a plate and the plate is spot welded to the pan, 2 per plate as close as I can tell from looking inside.. I want to put a Bail on it instead of these giant handles to get it to fit better into my pack.

ps, for more info on this pot look here: http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1014596&postcount=438

Thanks,

Cut them off and grind it flat.

I tried to bash a pot handle off and the spot weld tore through, ruining the pot. I had hoped the itty bitty spot weld would break. Nope.

Must argee, if you do it right you can even make the old handle stub the bail holder.

Drill or grind off the spot welds. Drill the center and if it dose not let go grind the edges of the hole until you can pop the welds apart. Just do not go too deep and get into the pot itself.

Yeah man, drill and hacksaw as much as you can without going through then clean it up as best you can with a file. The longer you take the better it I'll look in the end.

you are going to have too cut the handles off, leave the plate drill your holes, ooo you will have to dress the cut offs, seems like a lot of work.

that's what I was afraid of. I guess I'll just leave them on for now. I'll just have to make a bigger bag to put the pot in.

thanks for all the ideas.

Use an angle grinder with a cut off wheel. Cut the handles flush with the plates. Grind down a bit for smoothness. It's going to get used over fires anyway so a pristine look doesn't matter. It's bush equipment now.

End grinder w/cut off wheel would be a better choice imho, not that everyone has one lying about.

If the spot welds on the plate are pretty lite(and I assume they are) might be able to hit them with a cold chisel and break them. For that matter whacking the handles with a big enough hammer might break the spot welds.

ok, now i'm thinking about cutting off the handles with the angle grinder and grind the stumps flush with the plate. If I can't get the plates off the side after that then I'll use a file and make a groove Horizontally across each plate in the center and use that to secure a wire around the pot for the Bail.

Thanks for the help everyone. I spent so much time building the nesting Rocket stove I really don't want to screw this up now...

Is that a glass lid on the pot?
You might want to replace that with a metal one for durability. Fragile things tend to break often in my pack, yours may be better.

Trying to break the weld will likely tear the wall of the pot. The weld is going to be stronger than the parent material but it's also going to be brittle, the wall of the pot is the thinnest section, it will tear a chunk out of the pot if you try hammering on it. Grinding is going to be the safest approach.

sadly yes its glass. Im going to make a bag for it so I figure I'll just use it as is until it breaks then replace it with something else. its surprisingly thick glass.
