Roast in the Coals;
While on our camping trip my wife tried this roast in the coals recipe that she found in an old outdoor cookbook that we acquired. It turned out to be very tasty and one of the best roasts that I've had, you folks will have to try it. The title of the book is "Cookbook for Family Camping" first printing 1969. Basically what you do is buy a roast and then after you prepare it, you roast it in the coals of a fire for 45 minutes both sides for rare, and 1 hour both sides for well done. I will post the recipe instructions with a pic out of the book below this post.
My wife took care of the roast while I took care of the fire (as well as some blackberry brandy), as it is recommended that you have a feeding fire nearby for coals, while my son help cut firewood with an inherited old Boy Scouts of America emblem stamped hatchet. It was his first time using a hatchet so I gave him a safety and chopping lesson and then supervised what he was doing. I am hoping that by the time he is around 11 or 12 he won't know if his name is Cutwood or Getwood
as we use a wood stove to heat the house. If anyone tries this recipe please let us know how it turned out.
I have posted pictures below of the roast as well as the page from the cookbook for cooking instructions which is in a 2nd post below this one. The 1st picture is of the roast just put in the coals. The 2nd picture is after 1 hour on both sides in the coals and done roasting. The 3rd picture is knocking off the black crust of the roast. The 4th picture is showing the roast cut up and the 5th picture is the enjoyment of a great meal cooked in the fire. See post below for cooking instructions.
