Has anyone tried one of the Long Hunter shirts/hoods from Ron LaClair? They look pretty nice but a shirt and hood together will run over $100.00.

I use mine all the time (like yesterday, for instance)...

I've got a couple of her G Fred Asbell pullovers too...

If you get one of either, pay attention to material weight. I've heard a few complaints in the past from people that got lighter weight garments than what they wanted. Both Ron and Fred's web sites now do a good job advertising which color is what weight. There's a place for heavy and light weight ones - you just don't want to be surprised about which one you end up with. :)

I got mine 4 years ago. Still looks brand new. I haven't got to use it much because I lived and hunted and such in Southwestern Indiana, where it doesn't get cold enough usually for me to wear it. One night 2 years ago we had a expected low of 20 so I decided to test it so I put on a pair of Codet wool overalls, the R.L. Long hunter, a wool toque, and pack boots and went out on my porch and sat in one of my camp chairs just to test how warm I would be. I sat drinking a cup of hot chocolate and then just watched the night. Well I woke up as the sun came up went inside and made coffee. I was toasty all night. I still need to get a hood. I'd rate it a 5 outta five.

is that a dirrent model than the one they have now - the hood doesn't seem seperate?

It's the same model and the hood is a separate piece. I put the hood on first though, and the shirt on over that - it keeps the lower part of the hood on my back, chest and shoulders and out of the way of my bowstring. Doesn't look as ... medieval I guess but it's functional. :)

Ron LaClair's are made by Theresa Asbell????? or so you mean G Freds are made by Theresa?

both are made by her. i think there is a slight difference in appearance.

i have a gfa one, with the pull on hood/cape and LOVE it. it has been to warm here to wear it much, but it is very nice. for the price, you simply can not beat it.

i like the gfa one because i wanted the cape/hood and it was easier to order than the ron laclair one.

genius :D

I've been admiring them for a while, tried contacting Ron last year but didn't manage to get hold of him- not sure the email got through this is an insentive to try again - failing that one of the Macinaw would do nicely

can anyone help with sizing? i typically wear xl in most shirts and jackets, being 5'11" and 225lbs. are these cut for layering?

For what this is worth, I'm 6'4" and about 230#. I wear layers with my XXL longhunter shirt (and occasionally a wool vest over it) and that's been good enough to get me down to 10 or 20 below zero while still-hunting. Of course, that requires a far sillier hat...

Wow, glad I started this thread. Thanks for all the feedback.

How soft is the wool? I'm especially interested in how well the hood feels when wearing it all day...

Edit: Who/what is GFA? Does anyone have a link to their site?

Jon.

Your a trooper Slayer.......Say, is that hat made of Bunnies? ;)

Not by me but the fur trim is bunny skin. Yow! Warm and cozy - it's like having your head and neck snuggled by contented kittens. But I digress.

As to the wool content - I think the Asbell ones and the LaClair ones are all 100% wool. As to the softness of the LaClair hoods - they feel pretty good to me but then I'm known to put some pretty weird things on my head so your mileage may vary.

I believe you buddy! I am currently reading a book where the author spent the better part of twenty years during the late 1800's exploring the northern Forest of Canada and a number of times he speaks of how Nothing, no wool, would keep you as warm at night as a bunny blanket or the famous bunny socks.
Sorry for the thread train wreck but fuzzy bunnies make me do silly things.

i believe they are 100% wool. they are made from blanket wool, so it is a little rough. i typically dont wear the hood all the time, only in bad wind or rain/snow. but it does not bother me. of course i typically have another hat on as well.

i imagine if wearing the shirt with nothing underneath it would be pretty itchy, but with layering i have never had a problem, and it is warm.

I must say, very few people can make the fashion statement that bushcrafters do, and few bushcrafters can make the fashion statement that Slayer can.

Man, if you're going to slay bunnies, do it in style!

I'm both delighted and abashed. :p My daughter still thinks I'm a dork. :D
