Do we have any S.O.S eaters here? I haven't had it in a long time because of the high sodium content but I love(d) it soo much. My dad made it for us as kids and it turned out to be one of those things that stuck around for decades.

If you are a S.O.S eater do you have a special recipe to share?

Oh yeah man, mom fixed that for us when I was a kid. We loved it and I still do.

My wife and I will eat it but the boys didn't as kids. Now that they are a little older they will occasionally.

Just cheap chipped beef, white gravy and pile it on toast, add pepper....yummy!!!
 
Just downloaded this receipe to try it out. I remember a guy in the army fed me this once after basic...loved it!

Ingredients
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups warm milk
1 (8 ounce) jar dried beef
1 pinch cayenne pepper
Directions
1.In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt butter. Whisk in flour all at once to form a roux. Whisk in milk, a little at a time, increase heat to medium-high, and cook, stirring, until thickened. Bring to a boil, stir in beef and cayenne, heat through and serve over toast.
 
Man I loved that stuff in the Navy. Have not had it since, 20+ years ago. Crave it on occasion. I will have to try some of these recipes.

I grew up on it. Now, my wife won't even try it. I can make it with tuna, salmon or leftover ham, but no beef. And she won't eat it on toast, so I have developed a taste for it on rice. Plus, it is more filling. I also mix it with lots of peas.
 
Always made it like this: A tablespoon or two of butter in a skillet, shred the dried/chip beef up into small pieces, cook in butter until edges curl. Add some flour, maybe two tablespoons or so. Stir a bit. Add milk and turn down to low. Stir until it gets thick like a gravy, add a couple dashes of worchestershire sauce, spoon onto toasted English mufffins...pass the coffee. YUM.

My very first Mess Sargent made SOS. Big plate of home fried potatos smothered with SOS and six over easy eggs on top. All the Whole milk you could drink. If you could breath when you were finished you could go all day on all those carbs, starch and protein, Yummo!!!
 
My mom made it a lot. I remember in the fifties my dad would moan and groan about the SOS but I noticed he always ate it all up. Great stuff but hard on the salt intake and arteries. I'm gonna try that recipe that Wolfy posted soon.
 
One of the versions of the stories that I read on this dish and one that is painfully descriptive, calls the hamburger version SOS or Sh*t on a Shingle and the chipped beef version, Foreskins on a Raft:26:
 
My mom made it also. My dad refused to eat it since he had every day in the army (according to him). I still make make every couple of months.

Used to eat it a lot as a kid. Grandparents canned lots of it for winter. I get it once and a while now from my Aunt.

Chipped beef, some gravy and a thick slice of home baked bread to pour it all over mmm good!
 
My dad was one of the few who LOVED Army chow and one of his favorites was SOS. My mom learned to make a pretty reasonable fact simile of Army SOS for the love of Dad, and I always enjoyed it too. Haven't had any in 40 year but this thread brings back good memories. I sure do miss my my Mom & Dad. I have no memory of where she got the beef to make this. May have been the local Pipikaula or dried salted beef.
 
My Dad was in the Navy and served in the Korean War. Mom learned how to make it because he sometimes got a hankering for it. So I grew up eating it and so far of all I have tried, Mom's was without a doubt the best. For one thing she put more meat in it than most folks and she also seasoned it more and better.
I make it from my best estimation of her recipe, because unfortunately she never wrote it down before she past into Glory.
Anyway I haven't made it in years as I haven't seen the right kind of beef in the stores for some time.
 
believe me or not that's what i am eating right now for brunch. stoffers creamed chipped beef on toast. one of my favorite treats right there with corned beef hash and potatoes. hope every one is having a great Christmas day.
 
Both my parents were in WWII,so whatever food the Army served is what my Mom learned to cook! I seem to miss it now maybe we'll shred some moose and have a go at it here at the lake.
 
Believe it or not, there was a cook at my college that cooked the stuff and a friendly ole' country gial that would see me coming through the line a fix me a bowl before I got there. Told her I'd heard stories about the stuff and she poo pooed me! Try it!

I did and that was the end of me. Love the stuff and found a wife who makes it. Priorities, my friend. Priorities.....................Ross
 
Funny to see this thread. We were talking about sos lastnight. My dad LOVED it. I'd still eat it too..if it wasn't for the sodium. It is DELISH....but it ain't good for ya!
 
I learned to make it in scouts, but we used sausage. Tried the chipped beef before and it was too salty for me. Might try the Marine Corps version. BRW, i thought gravy was a food group? ;-)
 
SOS and FOR got their names in the World Wars. Easy to fix in trenches or field kitchens, so it was done often and not always with the freshest ingredients.
 
SOS at the VFW after church on Sunday mornings in Loves Park IL!

Ground beef, with potatoes on toast with a fried egg on top and a Bloody Mary!

After that breakfast you didn't eat until Dinner!
