Savage Rascal

I had one back around 2014. Basically a kids rifle. Short stock with peep sights. Only time I went hunting with my wife on our farm for squirrel. She with a h&r 410, me the rascal. Got 2 that day with the rascal. At the time I had my ffl, so I had many firearms. The rascal was a favorite. Sold it to a friend for pest control. If I didn’t have a little badger now I would buy another rascal.

I did a quick search, but I'm not a good searcher. :) I found mention of them but no reviews.

Who has one? What's your opinion of them?

It should be easy to find some reviews on YouTube & I imagine there is much written over on Rimfire Central about them by now as well.

I haven't shot one, but have handled several. They are heavier, but more solidly-built & have a nicer trigger than the Chipmunk/Crickett rifles. They have a more traditional, modern action than the Chipmunk or Henry Mini-Bolt, which have the (arguably less safe) old-style pull-cocker-knob action.
The sights are quite good and I would expect decent accuracy overall (Canadian-built Savage rimfires generally shoot well enough). I only wish they made an adult-sized version with a bit longer LOP - not sure why they don't...

Kind Regards,

SH

I have two that I bought for my kids. They’ve been shot very little but I like them a lot for what they are. They have a lot of nice features like the aperture sight, drilled and tapped for scope mount, free float barrel, and good trigger. There used to be an outfit making a longer stock for them, and I’ve also seen some folks who made extensions for the plastic stocks. I’m not a big guy, only 5’9” and I have trouble making myself small enough to shoot these rifles. I’ve mainly used them myself when I was doing nuisance animal trapping for farmers and also as a gun to throw in my pack basket when I was doing fence work, etc.

I had one back in 2018 and liked it. My only gripe was that it had light primer strikes occasionally that required re-working the bolt. Apparently that was a somewhat common problem back then. Hopefully that has been dealt with. It was accurate and somewhat more robust than my Chipmunk.

I also had one for my son, as well as a pink Chipmunk for my girls. As Squirrelhunter mentioned, the Rascal’s action has been much easier for the kids to use.

I like it well enough that even though my son has outgrown it, I’m hanging into it because I think it makes a great light packable rifle and I’ll be looking into ways to customize it for myself.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to buy one tomorrow. A place about an hour south has them on sale, and Savage has a rebate going on right now. The Rascal will cost just over a hundred bucks.

I am hoping they have an orange one, but I'm not too hopeful. I know they have black, green, blue, red, purple, and pink. I'm leaning towards the green. Possibly the red, because it will match the color of my wheeler. :)Screenshot_20250919_075339_Chrome.jpg

This will be my wheeler gun. I'll carry it around the property for plinking, squirrels, rabbits, etc. I'm pretty anxious to get it. :)
