Hey guys, I have a piece of leather I'm going to put on my splitting axe for a good looking collar. Does anyone have pics of there to inspire me? I'm trying to figure out spacing for the holes, and if I should wet form it.

It will need to be wetformed to fit right. On mine, I punched the holes and laced with gutted paracord. I think the leather needs to be thinner so it doesn't stick out past the head. It will get messed up pretty quick otherwise. I also found that a small spot of contact glue really helps to hold it in place. The collars I make are spaced 1/4 in between the holes.

I made mine without wet forming. I made a template with poster board, and trimmed it until the shape of the leather matched the contour of the helve. The recess at the shoulder holds it in place. I laced it with latigo.

I've made a couple but they weren't anything to write home about!

Course, I may have improved my leatherworking skillz since then:p

Here's on I made the other day. Very heavy leather, rivetted. The strap uses a snap on either side.

There is more good news; it was really easy to make. I definitely spent more time making the template than the collar itself if you don't count the time spent doing other things while the dye set.

Take care,

Here's some leatherwork on my 'hawk. Sorry about the pic, it's the only one I have.
