A couple days ago I read gaga's thread on a new crook knife
http://www.bushcraftusa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52183

Several years ago I made small carving/whittling knives for our scouts.
I got tired of bandaging finger cuts made by pocket knives.

The blade is a small piece of a metal cutting band-saw blade.

I used Gorilla glue this time. I did put glue on both sides. Some how this is the only photo of the glue up.

Clamped up.

Another way to clamp. I will let sit overnight.

This glue is some strange stuff.

I used my 4 1/2" angle grinder to get a rough shape.
And the belt sander to finish up.

The one on the left is a old one. The Center and right are new.
I didn't take much time on finishing. I would give a knife and piece of sand paper to the scouts so they could do the finish work.

I used my angle grinder to knock the teeth off the blade then
use a file to set the edge on the blade and use sharpening stones
to finish up the edge.

I haven't done any heat treating on them so they only hold a ok edge.
It helped with the scouts sharpening skills. :4:

Next to make one of gaga's spoon knives.

Question

How would you heat treat them? Could you shape the blade, heat treat and then glue it up?

I am very new at this and I would like to give it a try.

Thanks for the help in advance. This is a great group of educators.

iscromain I am going to try to shape a few blades then heat treat.

I haven't done much heat treating, this will be good practice.
If I mess up not much lost.

I am not happy with the gorilla glue. The blades are a little loose
where they come out of the wood. All my old ones I used carpenters
glue. They are still very tight.

I have used gorilla glue several times. It always expands and foams a little, but I have never seen it foam like yours. I wonder if it was too wet?

For building knives, I alwas use epoxy.
