I had a somewhat enlightening experience yesterday. What I learned can be expressed in the following lyrics by Billy Joel -
"Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers, you get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers."
While this may seem like a straightforward suggestion to some, it really hit home for me. I had the afternoon off yesterday and decided to do a bit of shopping at one of the strip malls in the area. I usually try to avoid these places as the sheer number of shops & restaurants is unbelievable and thus the traffic is frustrating. Anyway, I wanted to check out a few stores and the strip mall is convenient in terms of proximity.
SPEAKERS: The CD player in my car stereo has been broken for many months. I am usually satisfied with listening to the radio, but I thought I'd check out the stereos at Best Buy. So I perused their selection of car stereos and found that the prices were a lot lower than what I was expecting for a quality stereo. So what the heck? I went to the installation guys and asked if they had any time to install it this weekend (instant gratification? oops). They told me that they wouldn't be able to get to it until the middle of next week. So I decided that it wasn't the right time to buy a new stereo, and the radio would keep me jamming for a bit longer.
VS.
SNEAKERS: The next store on my list was meanie's Sporting Goods to check out their hiking boots. I've had some Merrell low tops for the past 3 years that have served me on various outings as well as daily use around town. They're so comfortable! I picked up basically the same shoe, but a newer model in the "mid" size.
Driving home, I realized that the sneakers were a much better purchase than the "speakers." While the speakers may have accumulated more miles by being part of a car, the miles I get in my new boots will be much more enjoyable. The mileage will be endured seeing nature & the outdoors. Most importantly, the mileage will be with my own two feet and not four wheels.
Thanks for reading.
