Just thought I would pop in here and say hello. I am a new member and live in Miami, Fl now but grew up in Homestead Area. I am a newbie at bushcraft and wanted to ask any members from SW Florida where is a good place to practice bushcraft that is not on the beaten path.

Southwest florida here. I am thinking of doing a camping trip in a couple weeks.

Hello, and welcome. I'm up at the farm right now, Madmax is asleep in the front yard under a lean to by the fire. We, for the time being, still live in Homestead. Keep an eye on this forum, we get together fairly frequently for good time wilderness adventures, I'll be glad to give you a ride to the next one I can attend.

Welcome from NE Florida. I was born & raised close by Dadeland Mall in the Kendall area. Miami is a nice ace to be from, I never want to see the place again.

Welcome. You might have to travel a bit to get together with us at first. Hushnel don't bite (usually). He's right down there. We've been trying to put together something down near you. I'll do my best to bag some sites next winter down there. Next camp wil be in central FL someplace in Feb.

I am in Sarasota and welcome to the tribe. I have yet to attend a get together but I have no doubt all these guys are the real deal after hanging out with one of them for an afternoon.

Madmax is one member I look forward to meeting, I have heard too many good things about the man. Hope you all are having a good time at the farm too!

Thanks for all the welcomes and Hushnel thanks for the offer. I don't know when I will be able to go to one of the meets in Florida but I am sure going to try. Traveling is not a problem, it's the time off from work.

I'm wondering the same thing my self.

I live in the Homestead area and was looking for a place I can practice basic bushcraft skills. Everglades National park is near by but cutting trees is a big no no as is building fires unless you do it at designated campgrounds, but I think you need to reserve the camp ground area to be able to do that. Also, camping can only be done in two different camp grounds, you can't just plop down anywhere. There's the Club House Beach back country camp area which do allow camp fires on the sand but I hear it's a head ache to arrive by foot.

I've noticed a lot of people camp in Ocala but that's a bit far for me to head out in a afternoon to practice. Does anyone know where you can practice bushcraft/firecraft near Homestead, Florida without getting in trouble or fined?

Thanks

I live in the MidTown area of Miami, as well as living up in Gainesville. There are no State Forests in South Florida, other than Okaloacoochee Slough and Picayune Strand, and they are on the other side of the State. There are several WMAs, like Fisheating Creek you can visit. South Florida Water Management has a lot of property. Much of it is accessible, and some, like Southern Glades, is a good place to hike and camp. It is pretty close to Homestead.
