I tried out a knife that I got awhile back for gutting fish while Tomahawk and I were out fishing today.

I picked up this cold steel roach belly at cheaperthandirt for around 10 bucks. It's very sharp and sliced right thru with no problem while gutting these trout. The smaller the trout, then myself anyway, the more careful I have to be as it's harder to hold onto slippery trout while gutting, so it's nice to have a nice sharp blade. It seems to be a nice little all around cutter. I've got one of the cold steel finn bears also which seems to be a good blade for the price.

I like the feel and balance of those smaller roach belly knives. I keep drooling over a maplehandled canoe brand one in the track of the wolf catolog.

The Finnbears were on sale a few years back, and I bought one for each family member. These have been very good little blades, but were Taiwan made. I understand that since then they were shifted to Chinese production for a while, and quality was not so good. Word now is that they have/ are going back to Taiwan.
Worth checking the blade stamp before buying, if you buy from a store.

Thanks BST for that site. I checked it out and they have some nice knives on that site along with a lot of other items. I have a couple that look like the ones on that site. The medium early French and the small (neck knife size) early French. I got them a few years ago from a custom knife maker here in Montana. I have a few pricey knives that its hard, for me anyway to take to the field to use and abuse, so I usually end of carrying less expensive blades. Not sure if that site has been posted here before, so for anyone that wants to check out that site here is the link. It links to their cutlery section, click on the home page button at the top to see what else they have.

Roger that G1, the roach belly I have is marked Taiwan. I'll have to check before I buy.

Thanks, Jäger

Ahhh the roach belly, I also possess one of these fine pieces of cutlery... its a good blade, holds an edge, gets the job done, only thing I don't like about it is the handle, prefer it to be a more sturdy material. but its still a good knife.

man, there are some sweet, inexpensive handmade knives on that site. those are the best looking knives i've seen at those prices.

If I recall correctly Priam1 uses that as his bushcraft knife. I got to look at it up close and handle it at the Bushcrafters' Ball. Not a bad knife for the money.

I have several of those Green river blades. I would put them up against a mora anyday.

BTW, tracks printed catolog is the best. full color and 1 to 1 exact size pictures where it will fit the paper, obivously not on gun barrles and stocks ect, A bit spendy at 10 bucks but well worth it.
