When I’m alone, I try to think about things that I could experiment with. I thought about The Simplest Stove as I was driving the other day and also thought about some old log sections that I had laying around in the back of the house. I just put a new chain on my chainsaw and was thinking about all of the ways that I could make it dull. Dull chains and unreliable motors seem to be my path in the world of chainsaws, hence, the love for axes.
The one chainsaw that I do have and love is a cheap MacColloch. It’ll fire up every morning, run for 45 minutes, stall out and refuse to start until the next day. But it runs, which is more than I can say for my other saws.
I pulled an old punky log out of the pile and rolled it up to the shed. I fired up the saw and made the cross cuts and then tossed it on the side to carve a chamber. I didn’t really think it through, but I will at some point. I originally thought I could use the chamber as an oven, which is still up for discussion.
I rolled the log up the hill to my pseudo-campsite and fired it up. The chamber that I cut definetly helped with the task of igniting the log. Without it, you’re left sticking tinder in the cuts of the log, which is a little more labor intensive.
I put my kettle on the top and melted some snow, which took no time at all.
The interesting thing about this project is that if you look at how the cuts are made, it would equal four decent sized pieces of wood. At this elevation, counting for the punk of the log, those pieces of wood would have lasted me about 45 minutes. An hour and a half in and those pieces were still burning an intact. This is a wood-saver for sure. The chamber also threw a lot of heat, which was a difference from the last simple stove that I made. I was able to stay warm and cook and save wood. Novel concept.
I’m not done experimenting with this project. I’m going to think about design and chamber placement to see if I can maximize the efficiency of the chamber. Maybe try it with two chambers – one as an oven and the other as an ignition hole.
If you haven’t tried this, do. It is an entertaining project. And if you have success with making an oven in the log, shoot me an email. I’d love to see how you did it.
