When I’m alone, I try to think about things that I could experiment with. I thought about The Simplest Stove as I was driving the other day and also thought about some old log sections that I had laying around in the back of the house. I just put a new chain on my chainsaw and was thinking about all of the ways that I could make it dull. Dull chains and unreliable motors seem to be my path in the world of chainsaws, hence, the love for axes.

The one chainsaw that I do have and love is a cheap MacColloch. It’ll fire up every morning, run for 45 minutes, stall out and refuse to start until the next day. But it runs, which is more than I can say for my other saws.

I pulled an old punky log out of the pile and rolled it up to the shed. I fired up the saw and made the cross cuts and then tossed it on the side to carve a chamber. I didn’t really think it through, but I will at some point. I originally thought I could use the chamber as an oven, which is still up for discussion.

I rolled the log up the hill to my pseudo-campsite and fired it up. The chamber that I cut definetly helped with the task of igniting the log. Without it, you’re left sticking tinder in the cuts of the log, which is a little more labor intensive.

I put my kettle on the top and melted some snow, which took no time at all.

The interesting thing about this project is that if you look at how the cuts are made, it would equal four decent sized pieces of wood. At this elevation, counting for the punk of the log, those pieces of wood would have lasted me about 45 minutes. An hour and a half in and those pieces were still burning an intact. This is a wood-saver for sure. The chamber also threw a lot of heat, which was a difference from the last simple stove that I made. I was able to stay warm and cook and save wood. Novel concept.

I’m not done experimenting with this project. I’m going to think about design and chamber placement to see if I can maximize the efficiency of the chamber. Maybe try it with two chambers – one as an oven and the other as an ignition hole.

If you haven’t tried this, do. It is an entertaining project. And if you have success with making an oven in the log, shoot me an email. I’d love to see how you did it.

Pax Domini Sit Semper Vobiscum,

Mike, Oscar, Hotel…..out

I'm thinking that I have a Husky chainsaw and a couple chunks of wood that are needed to feed the saw. I'm going to give this a try. Thanks for sharing.

(as an aisde, what is Mike, Oscar, Hotel? I know it the letters MOH but what does that mean?)

friar...I could be totally wrong, but last year I won a giveaway from him when his external site just went up.... I believe it's just his attempt to keep some privacy to his name (initials) in this internet world with little of it! :27:

Thanks guys. One reply on the blog said that the person was going to try it with oak. That oughta be cool. In addition to what I did in this article, I used it again the following night with the same log and added some small wood. It was pretty neat. The main components of the log are still intact, but the center is pretty well burned out at this point. Beyond that, I used a long log. I can make more cuts in the same log and do it all over again. As I said before, I want to mess around with this design more. Maybe make horizontal cuts, work on the oven aspect, etc.

Solocanoe is right on about the name. Mike, Oscar and Hotel are the call letters for MOH (My initials) in emergency services, where I spent some time. I'm a husband and a dad and while I love interaction on forums and the blog, I'm also very protective of my privacy. I work for a large corporation now and I don't want my personal views confused with my professional career (if you can call it that). I ask anyone who writes on the blog to use an alternate name. It makes things fun. :)
