my question :

Is there a time limit on posting on threads? I've noticed the term "necro posting" associated with some threads. The last time I noticed it the thread was closed. Do old threads have an expiration date on them that we are not allowed to post/comment on them anymore?

In my opinion (not that it matters much) If you "necro post" it should add something to the conversation.

The post you are referring to was an older post, that now is an off -topic subject and had no place on BUSHcraft USA any longer.

There is no time limit on threads but the most recent thread that was reopened sounded like it was attempting to start a fight. I think if you opened up a thread that was older and added something useful to it then theres no problems. I could be wrong though

It goes to the content of the original thread and why it's being resurrected. A tutorial that's bumped because the information is relevant to what the poster is working with is always received with help from others. A heated this vs that thread that is brought back up with the intent to incite an emotional response from the forum has been frowned upon by the mods and administration. Just my experience so far.

I'm no mod here but I have seen plenty of old threads brought back to life with a post that contributed to it.

Also a question like this is probably better suited as a question via PM to the mods. JMO

Kerri, and Tnceeder got it correct. This instances you speak of today were moderated by me and closed due to a member deliberately necro posting a thread in order to cause problems and being a troll

if its an " off topic " why not eliminate out of hand ? what i am wondering is . is there a time limit on threads . i have seen the term necro posting in a few post over the past few months, and IF memory serves me, they're all closed.

P.S. Y'all type way faster than me. Thank you all for your responses. It makes sense now, it's just that I saw that term in some threads over the past few months that were closed and wondered if it had anything to do with there being an expiration date. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

P.P.S. Not trying to be a meat head.

Necro- means dead.... like beating a dead horse..... or boring people to death.... if there nothing new worth adding to the thread leave it in the grave yard. .. If the thread seems relevent to something worthy that is happening currently or there has been new developements.... or its a thread that people need to be reminded about....AKA forum etiquette... then its okay to pull a lazarus and be raised from the dead.

Musta been somebody what got COAL for Christmas. Why folks gotta start stuff is beyond me.

I do like it when someone finds an interesting old thread I may have missed and bumps it.
I dislike it when it's just an old argument brought back up. That seems pointless and takes up space.

I agree with GA MTN MAN I really like stumbling up on a thread that's 5 pages full of really good stuff and thinking to myself how on earth could so much good information appear overnight, then to look at the date and find that the thread was started in 2007.

I mod another couple small forums and my rule of thumb is that if there hasn't been a post in more than two weeks it's considered dead. However, if you can contribute tot he original discussion and contribute something valuable then there is an indefinite lifespan on that. Starting a fight, goading someone, adding something silly like "Cool" is necro posting.
