I'm looking for a titanium (light-weight) stove to use in a 8-sided tarp tipi from WyomingLostAndFound. I'm currently looking at several tent stoves and am having a hard time figuring out which one would be better and why. Hopefully folks here could share their thoughts on the idea?

Main options that I've found:
TiGoat Cylinder Stove
TiGoat Box Stove
Kifaru Tent Stove
Seek Outside Tent Stove

Initial thoughts are leaning me to the small TiGoat box stove or the Kifaru small so that I can get heat and a cook surface out of the deal. But I'm worried about the titanium warping and the box being difficult to assemble afterwards. Also, the box ones look more difficult to assemble in general.

Any thoughts? Woodswalker, I know you've used a couple of the above, can you share your experiences a bit?

ETA: Forgot to mention, this will be used for backpacking.

Woods Walker has a decent heated shelter primer here. It is multiple pages long but a very good read all the way through.

I just bought my first stove, a TiGoat 12" Cylinder, but have not had a chance to use it yet. I wanted it more for heating vs. cooking and backpacking. I might pickup a Kifaru Para or small soon to play with as well to compare.

Thanks for the link and I did read that thread. Honestly WW's posts are what got me thinking along these lines last year. Why shudder through a winter camp, keping a large fire going outside and loosing most of the heat, when you can just have a small one going in a heated shelter. Survive Vs. Thrive in my mind. In that thread, there wasn't much on different stove types and the benefits/drawbacks of each, though. I've had a hard time finding that info anywhere...

I'm looking forward to hearing your experiences with the newer TiGoat as well.

stoves

Ive got the large and arctic Kifaru stoves in stainless and they warp and bend a good deal. Stainless is actually worse to warp than Titanium from my experiances.

Ed built the Kifaru stoves for a good while and now is making cyclinder stoves. He's coming out with an larger diameter cyclinder stove (something like an 10"diameter) and it sounds like an better burner. I plan on getting one of his 10" diameter stoves for my Ti Goat 6.5 shelter.

Damn. Wish I knew of these before ordering my TiGoat stove. a 10" x 16" long cylinder would be perfect for me.

Pros and Cons..

Ti goat Cylinder stove.

Its very UL and packs down to nothing also the least expensive. On the negative not nearly as bomb proof and harder to cook on. I think DJ has upgraded the stove to make it easier to assemble as mine is hard with cold hands. I wish it had taller legs.

Ti Goat Box stove.

I don’t own one but have only heard good things from those who do. I would worry a bit about the small screws and pack extras.

Kifaru.

I own all of them save the Medium and Arctic. They work very well for a take down box stove. I wish Patrick would make a damper for them. Still they’re good and Kifaru offers an unbeatable warrantee from a company who has been around longer than all of the others combined.

Seek Outside.

I don’t own one however think the legs should be a few inches longer. Not a big deal but this would add more clearance for the pipe and space to dry wood under the stove.

Warping of a box stove isn't a big problem as it all comes back into shape. I have made a few Cylinder shaped stoves and they work very well. I have purchased gear from Ed. T before and he is good to go. The guy knows a great deal on this topic.

I really like the look of those stoves... and I really like the fact that they're built to be modular so I can upgrade later. And if he's the guy that did the Kifaru stoves, well, can't beat that CV!

Thanks for the info. I think I'm leaning between the Kifaru and the edtsbackcountry one now. Decisions, decisions...

I say FourDog.

I saw those stoves and love the look of them. If I ever do a long-term hunting camp setup, where I don't have to bring everything in on my shoulders this would probably be the way I go.

I bought a cylinder stove from titanium goat last year. When I put it together, it just seemed a bit fragile (I tend to break stuff). I did not use it so they took in back in exchange for a box stove. Much better but I did not like the screws. I sent it back to Titanium Goat and they spot welded it. Now it is great and when you put all the stuff inside - the non folding aspect is not important. See Pic's. I have a 4 dog stove also. It is hard to compare the two - the 4 dog is superior in every way but it is too heavy and large for the solo outfit I will eventually put together. the spot welds are the discoloration along the edges. Now we need some snow.

Both 4 Dog and Titanium Goat are great to deal with and the are a good resource for info - Mongo
