Interesting idea, kind of reminds of the Turley PSK knife concept where you carry a small piece of steel that can perform some big jobs. I would have liked to see more uses for it in the blog post, as I'm not really familiar with an adze so it doesn't mean much to me to have one handy :p

I think I will just buy an inexpensive wood chisel and cut the blade off. I like the concept but I'm cheap...

I'm trying to think of what I would do in the woods that needs an adze. I've made a few knives, and I've done a bit of camping and such. And I've never found myself off in the hills saying, "Dag gummit, I sure do wish I'd brought my adze with me!!"

They really come in handy if you want to whip out a quick picnic table:54: I just went back and looked at the tool pictured in the original post and the bevel is supposed to be on the outside of the adze, not the inside. It will just dig in and not be controllable for depth of cut the way it's shown.

They can be handy for bowl, spoons, the sides of bows, etc... I plan on making some as well. Thanks for the thread.

Could also do something like Iawoodsman did. He modified the head from a CS trailhawk to an adze neat idea to. Plan to do this at least to try it.

Cold Steel Trail Hawk - YouTube

That's what I was thinking. As well, like Vaughn I never think, "hey I sure could use an adze right now." of course I guess you never know. Good piece of kit but the blog appears to suggest EDC'ing this thing. Not for me.

I do think it's a great idea for your pack in extended trips, maybe more than three days. Unless you have hawk to do it with.

While it dows look cool...To "ME" it just seems like another one of the 1000's of possible things to add to my pack contents...just another DO-DAD.......if I were to add all the stuff I see on the NET i would need a small Dump truck in the bush...

Yeah... he mentions toward the end of the post that he has a larger "pack adze" expressly for carrying in his pack for longer trips.

I agree on the trailhawk being a more useful tool (for me, anyway) but this is meant to be something small and unobtrusive enough to carry around in your pocket. A trailhawk head is neither of those things, at least not for my pockets! :p

The scenario he describes is you go for a walk away from your tour bus or something and get lost. This could be in your pocket along with a SAK or similar pocket knife and allow you to get a lot of tasks done where carrying a belt knife/hawk/axe isn't feasible. It may be sound a little far fetched, but I've been on two recent vacations where my wife and I ended up going for hikes or walks with what we had what was in our pockets and that was it. In both scenarios something like a belt knife or hawk would have been extremely conspicuous and/or illegal (e.g. traveling overseas where knife laws are depressingly restrictive).

Obviously my preference is to have a good day pack with essentials but that's just not always feasible, so I see the argument for a pocketable tool that can do some big jobs. Not saying I'm going to rush out and buy one of these but I do see some value in the general concept. Food for thought at any rate.

Great looking tool,Of course I'm sure it would definitely come in handy & be on my to do list for things to make more so for my sons who are in BSA.

I currently own a large adze so this will remain in the kids packs for me atleast,

Great tool if you've never used one I recommend you make or buy one "because you don't need one" it just makes the job easier, alot easier
