I am about to delve down a slippery slope. After very disheartening year of hunting I am going traditional. I am tired of the money and junk associated with modern archery. I went to BassPro today and saw an arrow rest for 150 dollars. It about made me sick. Anyway, I have a Bear Super Magnum"48" to start with. I would like to know what is the best book to get me started. Thanks folks.

Oh hell.....welcome to your next addiction!

Can't think of any good books but stickbow.com is a great place for traditional archery. For your area there is a good book out called :Traditional Bowhunting for Whitetail" by Brian J. Sorrells. Find some arrows that are splined to your draw weight and start shooting. Practice practice, practice. Unlike wheel bows you pretty much have to shoot year round to maintain your ability. It's and addiction but it goes hand in hand with bushcraft. Good luck.

I lost your address, PM me a ship to and I'll loan ya some of mine. You can peruse at will and do so for the cost of shipping them back. I got some stuff I need to send your way anyway.

right on Terry.. thats great to hear.. i started shooting with traditional tackle, many years ago and never had to deal with compounds.. it is a lot of fun.. now both my boys, my wife and my father in law shoot as well..:)

as far as books go.. 2 of the best i have found are "The Traditional Bowhunters handbook by T.J. Conrads.. T.J. is the founder/editor of Traditional Bowhunter magazine, which is an awesome mag..

and G. Fred Asbell's Instinctive Shooting 1 & 2 books are also very informitive.. check out his Stalking and Stillhunting book too..

Thanks boys I knew I could count on you. Maybe I could talk the founders into adding an Archery Sub Forum in the future.

Also makes very nice arrows.

I highly reccomend TJ Conrads book.

I don't have anything more to add but I don't like the modern gadgetry of archery either. They are clumsy affairs, very mechanical, and not so reliable deep in the bush without carrying extra parts or tools. I think much of the expensive equipment is tailored more for competition shooters than practical hunters.

I've been recently looking at the Martin Stick Longbow. Never tried a longbow before but I like the simplicity.

Good point. We have firearms, but missed the archery. I'll add it now.

G.F. Asbell seems to have the best current books out. Anything by several others, including Fred Bear of course, should help you out. Great to have you on the Trad side!

Welcome to the Dark Side. Enjoy your time with your BOW. It is not an archery device like the compounds. It will begin to feel alive in your hands the more you shoot. Keep practicing and the bow will tell you when and where to shoot. Don't ever let it become a chore for that will kill the love and enjoyment of shooting.

I'd be inclined to get one or two books by G Fred Asbell (actually, I have both of these):
Instinctive Shooting II and/or
STALKING AND STILL-HUNTING: The Ground Hunters Bible

Inspirational and instructional:
Come November by Gene Wensel

Oh, and you can download (for free) such classics as:
Hunting with the Bow and Arrow by Saxton Pope and
The witchery of archery by Maurice Thompson

You didn't ask but if you get only one video, absolutely make it:
Primal Dreams by the Wensel brothers and Mike Mitten.

SoB brought up videos, which I didn't think of at the time. I've got Masters of the Barebow Vol 1 & 2, both cover the many different styles as well as basics of form and some tackle tips. They are both pretty good videos.

So this is what would be in the box if you want to go the loaner route.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I did a little reading on the net last night. Once again I realize how much of a student I am. There is so much info out there it is mind numbing.

I shoot modern. Used to shoot traditional. I didn't notice "good" traditional stuff being much cheaper. I always liked the arrow speed of compounds. Having confidence at 40 yards is a good feeling, I never had that with traditional bows. I just got a new right hand Bowtech that is a duplicate of my lefty. Wanda ain't all that impressed..but the addiction continues. Good luck brother.

I'm a newer trad guy, this is my 2nd year. I have a lot to learn, I like the idea of the archery sub-forum and think it would be great to borrow books/videos to help each other out! I just picked up a dozen wood arrows and a new string for my Shakespear Naceda . I was a little in shock when the total hit a $100.00. Oh well I'm having fun with it!!

Trad Archery

Stay away from this trad archery stuff. It will become an addiction like all this bushcraft fun. Nope, it isn't cheap unless you can find used but the results are worth it. Just don't let the wife find out.

IA Woodsman,
I have been shooting a "Traditional Bow" for many years. The best advice I can give anyone is to not over think shooting just go out and start shooting. The more you shoot the better you will become. It takes some time to become a decent shot but the Journey there is a fun one. Remember to start with close shots, keep your eye on the spot you want to hit and do everything the same as far as anchor point and not dropping your arm ect.

Welcome! were less is better.
I like instinctive shooting and stalking and still hunting by G Fred Asbell.
I am going to have to try to get a copy of "witchery of archery" that looks like a good one.

Longbow!

"witchery of archery" is outstanding, it has some bushy stuff in there too.

Don't give up on the compound, just do both.Plus there is the
very addicting Bowfishing. For cheaper gear look in the archerytalk.com
classifieds,I got a lot of good deals from there.Good luck.
