I tried doing a search on this and nothing came up so I hope this hasn't been asked before...

Where i camp, mainly desertish terrain, there aren't a lot of trees and I'm not near a car or anything to tie a hammock too. I saw in the one tree hammock thread that a monkey bridge type thing may work but how about these?

just the actual anchors. I have them for my son's swing set and they seem to work well so i was wondering if i could use the four of them with 2 longer pieces of wood to keep off of the ground. I guess the hard part may be finding two 6 foot pieces of wood...maybe walking sticks as just a pivot?

anyone tried or seen something like this?

I am not sure how you could make those work in an area with no trees. If you are in an area with large rocks I have seen set ups using mt climbing rigs and then set up with climbing grade biners between the rocks, its really cool stuff

Good point, there are typically a lot of rocks. I would love to be able to hammock camp in the desert as it would be nice to be a part of the surroundings. I'm really scared of snakes though and have never felt comfortable just sleeping in a bag on a tarp.

Im with you on the snakes. Here in Florida we got our share of venomous snakes and ground sleeping without a tent is not an option. Between the snakes, fire ants, skeeters and ticks it is a recipe for something not good lol.

Check out some of the climbing clips that they insert into cracks in the rocks, then you clip a biner in each side and you are ready to hang. REI has a decent climbing gear section for that stuff. I know a few guys here climb, maybe they can chime in with pics of the clips I am referring to.

I would go check out hammockforums.net. When it comes to all things hammocks those guys have the answers.

I'm positive I've seen rock setups over there too.

I second the Hammockforum. That's another good group of people (some of the same as over here!)

I believe that if you could get 4 6 foot poles then you would be fine. 2 poles would be good for one anchor point, but I would not trust only 2 upright poles and nothing else.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I looked into the rock things, they are cams, and they are pretty pricey but really light and would probably work well, even if i could just get one in and then use 2 poles and 4 anchors. I'll check out that forum too.

Checked it out and within minutes had my answer. Looks like a portable stand is the best option. Thanks everyone for the help!
