Howdy,

Made a run to a buddies house today to help fix his truck and for my help he gave me an old axe of his. He had no info on it besides its being old and abused. I tried to research the makers mark but I had no success with my feeble attempts at finding its origins.

It is a 3 1/2 lb axe head, unknown makers mark, 36" handle. I am wanting to put a new handle on it as the old one is horribly cracked and the head is loose on the handle. The previous users had tried to add some small tack nails into the eye to expand it. I want to start this as my first axe handle project so we shall see were this leads. It needs a lot of TLC especially on the edge.

A few pictures for proof!! :4:

Thanks for looking and I know I will enjoy this work, definitely a tough one with limited tools and knowledge.

Okay yea I see the Council Tool mark now. Right on, thank you very much. Cleared that up, wonder if I could do some research and find the age on this thing. I can still see some red paint on the poll and top of the eye so it may be a recent one.

Serious question from an axe newbie. Is it possible to say handle this 3.5 lb head with a smaller handle or is it best to stick to the same sized handle? It is on a 36" handle right now but I was thinking it is too heavy to be put on a smaller handle say 20".

I think you can go shorter, if you want. A full size axe is easier to use with a longer haft, but yours is sort of light compared to most felling types.

Try a 32" or 33" if you can find a good one. Shorter than that and a 3.5# axe starts to feel funny to me.

I don't really notice a difference between a few inches among my longer axes in terms of transporting them, if that's a concern.

Cool axe.

Nice score and remember the longer th handle the further away from your legs it is.

Just sayin......

That's a beauty! Doesn't look too buggered up to me:D

Try a 30-35 inch long handle. I like straight ones best, but a little dogleg can help keep it in your hands if you're really doing the Angry Beaver impresssion!

Nice score, looks in pretty good shape to me and the handle looks pretty decent too. What about putting in a new wedge and soaking the handle with some oil and then cleaning it up. (maybe just the Scottsman in me but I always tend to fix rather than replace...)

Cheers, Bob
