Just a thought. Why not carry a utility knife with a whole rack of extra Sharp blades? Just a thought. I love my blades.

Because the blades are fragile and can snap. They do awesome at cutting boxes and tape. Might be a decent skinner. But I wouldn't use one to process wood except curls. And carving is out.

I have enough disposable stuff in my life already. I can sharpen to a higher level than utility blades, i could sharpen them too but rarely do. they are not all that great for carving or batoning

Not as a primary tool like a knife, but to have with you none the less. It is not very big nor are the blades. A utility knife could never replace or do what my knife and ax do. Like I said just a thought.

I carry a gerber e.a.b. in my pack. I've taken the blade out and used a heavy stick to cut through saplings before, worked pretty well. Better than pounding on your nice knife. If the blade chips or breaks, so what?

Thank you

I'd rather have my SAK than to carry one of those around all the time. Sure utilty knives have their place but it's not gonna replace my Mora or SAK anytime soon. Besides as a couple others said they break and not gonna carry something disposable

I personally suffered one of the most severe knife cuts ever from a stanley utility knife, I hate the things.

I keep a couple of utility knife blades in a small pocket kit I sometimes carry. Great for cutting cordage and as an impromptu skinner. Wouldn't want to rely on them as my only carry though.

This is the way I feel about them.

I carry a pocket knife around with me on a daily basis, plus 2 small ones on my key chain. My SAK can do the job, and if it cant my pocket knife can, if that cant then I'll be glad I brought the mora.

The closest to a disposable knife I usually have is an X-acto. I use one to skin tiny mammals (like a mole) whose hides I want for fly tying material.
In my work shop I do use a Stanley for squaring up corners of shallow mortises used to inlet a hinge for instance.

I do, it's a carabiner style. Have it with me all the time except church, weddings and/or funerals. They have their place in my bushcraft.:19:

I keep a folding utility knife in my tool box. I use it for cutting cardboard or scrapping gasket material. I basically use it for jobs that might dull my pocket knife.

I carry a folding utility knife, with an easy change blade as an EDC most weekend days. It gets used a lot. I also keep one in my PSK, and BOB. I like the Craftsman or Kobalt products. I keep spare blades in my truck, work bench, desk, etc. I can and do sharpen the blades using a hard ceramic stone. Works great. The blades are carbon steel and look like a small scandi grind.

In addition to using it for general handyman tasks it gets used for making tinder shavings, carving, cutting walking sticks etc. If you put to much sideways pressure on a blad it will chip or break, but a replacement costs less than the time to sharpen other blades. The back edge of a closed blade makes a dandy striker for ferro rods.
