Hi all,

I've had a Vargo Triad XE stove for a while, I really like because its so small and light. That being said, I've been having issues with it lately. When I start it up, the flames flare up and die down repeatedly for the duration of the burn. I think this is really affecting its heat output, so I thought I'd ask our experts here. Any ideas? I'm using regular Denatured Alcohol as I'm leery of the dangers of HEET.

I have one but I don't have a lot of burn time on it. Two things off the top of my head...try a different batch of alcohol...clean out the ports. Find a needle or T-pin the same size as the hole and run it through a couple times.

I tried the needle bit, even washed it a couple of times to make sure there weren't any contaminants in the basin of the stove. I'll try it with a new batch of alcohol and see what happens. Is it possible that the stove is starving for air? It doesn't make sense given how the stove is designed, or maybe that air is somehow leaking into the stove? just shooting in the dark here...

Thanks for the help :)

Hmm not sure what the cause might be. I believe Zelph is a real expert on Alky stoves, maybe he will have some suggestions.

I have the Vargo Triad, not the XE. I have never had that problem. Maybe your alcohol somehow got contaminated. How do you store it? Try a new can see if that helps. It is best to stay away from HEET. With the design of the stove, I don't think it is starved for air. Does the top still have a tight fit?

Its still pretty tight, sometimes its too tight. Have to pry it off with the flat edge of a key. I keep my alcohol in the garage, and since I live in Southern California right now, moisture is not really an issue :9:

Kind of. I'm currently using it with a crusader cook kit I got for christmas. The alcohol burner fits perfectly in the cup of the cooker and provides about an 1" of clearance from the burner to the base of the cook cup. However, the flaring of the stove even occurs under controlled conditions while I've been testing it in the garage.

I have the XE and had the regular Triad and never had that problem with either one. As was suggested already, I would try another batch of DA.

Try running it in the original stand rather than the Crusader to see if it makes any difference,

heet is the best,period.
denatured alcohol is like flipping a coin,i do not know what they put in it but it will be different in every can/batch,heet is the same like white gas clean burning..

I have the same issue. I have to prime mine at least twice to get it going. I think its the fuel I use. Mine also flickers quite a bit as well. So far I've only used it a few times out side. Been trying to perfect use in house first.

Using heet in the stove and so far so good no problems with fluttering or getting it going.
It is burning with a mostly blue with yellow flame.
