I learned something about ferro sticks this weekend. I learned that the piece of hacksaw blade with the teeth almost ground off threw sparks much better than a straight edge striker that came with my Swedish match.

Let's see your ferro's

Here are mine

The awl on a SAK or US knife. If it's something that's going to catch quick, like PJ cotton balls I just use the back of my knife.

I use the plier tips on my leatherman wave. It is hard on the rod, but really throws some sparks.

I usually use the spine of my knife or ny SAK Awl

I keep a piece of hacksaw blade attached to mine all the time, but use a sak can opener/awl & back of the knife as well.

The heavy Firesteel striker, awl on my SAK or US knife, spine of my blade as a last resort.

I use the file blade of my sak executive. It has a nice curve that fits my rod.

knife spine for me. 100% of the time. If mine come with strikers, I discard them...but I'm just into simple. less parts, etc....

Any stiff metal object that has a sharp edge will throw decent sparks. The key is having an object that is rigid as well as having a well defined sharp edge. Whether it's the spine of a knife, piece of tool steel, or even a piece of sheet metal you get the idea.

The sharper the edge the striker has, the easier it will be for it to bite really into the ferro rod, the stiffer your striker is, the harder you can bear down on the striker to help rip out larger slivvers of the ferro rod to create larger longer lasting sparks.

One of the best strikers I've used is the corona carbide sharpener. It has a really square super hard carbide edge that just shreds apart ferro rods. It have a nice longer handle about 3" long that can really grasp and apply leverage. On the flip side, the down side of having a really effective striker is the obvious accelerated wear on your ferro rod, but to me ferro rods are cheap. Quick fire is priceless.

Awl on my farmer, spines on my Sugar Creek blades. A big favorite of mine to use is a snapped hack saw blade, those little teeth throw some awesome sparks.

Backside of my Fallkniven F1 or the striker supplied with the steel.
I got some crappy firesteels from Ebay that had a blue hacksaw blade striker, they ended up in the trashcan.
I usually try to get the old stock "Fireflash" steels when I see them. They have a flat striker with somewhat rounded corners.

On my fixed blades I use the spine. If the spine can't throw sparks out fo the box I file it flat so it can.

I have a rotation of pocket knives and strike ferro rods different with each one.

With my Wenger s10 I use the can opener. The wenger can opener throws mad sparks.

With my Vic huntsman I use the saw blade

With my old shrade stockman I use the back of the sheepsfoot blade.

With my old Ulster scout knife I use the awl.
