When I'm out, I carry a small multi-tool blade, and a 12 inch kukri made by Ka-Bar for more heavy-duty work.
I know the market is largest for big fixed- and folding-blade knives marketed towards outdoorsmen; pieces maybe six, eight, ten inches in length, like many Buck, SOG, or Bowie-style knives. However I've never understood what the use of these tools are, since they're too small for any chopping duties that might suit a machete, and too large for any fine work to be done with a 2-4 inch multi-tool blade.
I used to have a couple really nice Buck knives and bowies, but I got rid of them--my kukri saw more wear in one trip than any of those knives had in years.
Is there some big function of these knives that I'm missing? What do you guys use them for?
