A little over 6 miles. The radar images showed the snow was coming. I was really looking forward to hiking in the blizzard. In the end I was disappointed all we got is a little sleet. Well there is always tomorrow. :29:

Planning a hike tomorrow at a new location I have not hiked before. That should be fun if we ever get the snow that they promised.

Looks identical to the woods I was trompin around in today, nice to see you got out as well.

Draco, we got some rain over this way and the wind is pretty severe. I was gonna go out today but didn't because of the weather. :/ You've motivated me to give it a go tomorrow even though it's supposed to be just as windy. Our snow is all gone here. Have a feeling this winter may be wet/cold for us more so than snow/cold.

The wind did not pick up bad here until I got home. So far we only have a light dusting. We are still under that winter storm warning so tomorrow may be a fun day in the woods. It is odd weather for MI this year. I was considering snowshoes this year but so far I am happy I did not spend the money.

Have fun tomorrow. I am thinking about hitting Yankee Springs trails if the roads are not too bad. If the roads are bad I am heading to Ott Preserve just because it is close.

draco, up just north of grand rapids. cant believe the weather so far. today was a big let down but ive seen more activity from the deer and turkey around my house today than in the last 3 weeks.

I hope you were kidding about the wanting to hike in a blizzard part....I am a desert girl and never saw a blizzard in my life.... but wouldn't it be a little on the dangerous and unwise side of the fence to actually go out anticipateing a blizzard? Please be safe... If you get lost with hypothermia.... you are putting Search and Rescuers in danger trying to find you.... PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE BE SAFE.... no one wants to see you hurt.

Blizzards are fun if you don't do anything dangerous or stupid. :14:

Nice outing, Draco. I was thinking the same thing here. Blizzard didn't start until around 7:30PM here and it looks like we just may finally get that 6 - 8" they have been promising. I have the day off tomorrow, so I'll have to get out and see how my base camp is doing. It would have been nice to camp out and wake up to a new world.

Thanks for caring. I will be fine. I'm an old phart and it is not my first rodeo. :4: Pretty hard to get lost in my area even in heavy snow. Hiking in a straight line in any direction will get you to a road in under two hours.

Now I would be more worried about hiking in your deserts. My last hike in the high desert had me dehydrated before I knew what hit me. I took plenty of water but could not drink it fast enough. I guess we are all more comfortable with the environment we are used to.

I do always let someone know where I am going and sign in at the trail head register if there is one. You do make a great point. I hope no one reading this decides they should do as I do and get themselves into trouble. You have to know your area and your abilities. If in doubt don't do it. As (Dirty) Harry Callahan said "a man's got to know his limitations."

That is the same thing I was thinking. The temps look like they will be in an acceptable range. It would have been a fun night to kick up a roaring camp fire, spend the night, and wake up to a nice blanket of new snow.

.... glad your safe about it... what would happen if you sprained an ankle or God forbid broke a leg from triping over a hole or falling... couldn't you freeze to death? a blizzard would scare the tar out of me... that is way beyond my comfort zone...I am glad this not your first rodeo.

I guess your right though... 115 degee weather suits me just fine....over 2/3rds of the weight I carry is water... and I know how to find water in the desert.... but it is seriously dangerous to anyone who dosen't know what they are doing... in the summers the nights are warm enough where you dont even really need a fire to stay warm... which is great because wood is scarce unless you know where to look... and how to make small fires.... but in the fall and winter people can freeze to death out there even if the day was nice... I would never recognmend going out solo to a greenhorn.

It is better to expect certain weather, be ready for it, and not get it than the reverse.

It really is all about what you are prepared for. In my case the world is covered with water I can melt over a fire so no problem there. There is normally a ton of fallen wood so a fire is easy as long as you know where to look for dry stuff to get it started. Hopefully I can self rescue or be found before I need food as during the winter it is harder to come by.

I don't carry a sleeping bag on day hikes (maybe I should) but I do have a tarp and a few of the necessities. I guess there are worst case scenarios that would be bad for anyone like getting trapped under something that would require rescue but I tend to avoid things that could trap me. About 50% of the time I have someone with me so that is always a plus for self rescue.

I really would like to do one of the desert survival courses. I have been looking at Cody's class for the last year or so. I might get that done in 2013 so I am more comfortable in your neck of the woods. I really enjoyed the desert and look forward to doing some more hikes out there.

Yep, you should have come up north, we did end up with about 6" or so. I am thinking about starting up the plow truck, but haven't made up my mind yet. The first good snow I usually just use the drive and pack method, to get a little base going before I have to plow.

Like you I would probably be a little nervous in the desert, but after 30 years in the North Woods, a little snow isn't anything to worry too much about.

When I was about 14 my brother came home from the big SAC base in Oscoda with the Air Force parka with wolf fur and the whole bit . So anyway I borrowed his snow pants a parka and hiked downtown in this huge blizzard we had that year .
This was before snowmobiles were very popular and there were motorists stranded on HWY 30 for fifty or a hundred miles and I wanted to see if I could help .
I really couldn't help but I always remember how I felt in that parka , like I was in a snug little cocoon impervious to the cold . BTW I recently bought a copy of that parka at the local army surplus and I hope to test it this weekend .

We only got two inches. I'm headed out in a little while to enjoy the white stuff. Not sure where I am headed yet. I might just stick to some trails i know instead of driving very far and not being able to park.

Too bad for the lack of snow.. I love hiking out in the not so nice weather.. Great pics BTW
